a buddy gave me a 77 j-10, with a 258 and a weber carb. (and jacobs ignition) well in having it shipped here, something must have came loose b/c it idles really fast now and diesels and backfires when i turn it off. i am guessing it is the elec choke. any ideas on how/where to adjust that?

thanks all

if it's idling fast, dieseling and backfiring, it sounds like your idle speed (fast and or curb) and/or mixture are all out of whack...it diesels and backfires because there is still fuel running through it after you shut it down - same as if you hit the gas and shut it off quickly...

you can check the choke visually by removing the air cleaner and looking to see if it's open or not when the engine warms up...if it's wide open, then it's doing what it should and is not likely causing the problem...check this first (since it only requires opening the hood and taking a butterfly nut off), then tune the carb and see what happens...
