/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Any of you hot-rodders out there want a nice, flexalite fan and spacer for your Jeep? I just took one off our 304 and am looking for a stock fan with a clutch setup. I was going to buy a new clutch anyway, but it takes the fan with the big center hole. For a clutch./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I'm not sure. I would have to look on my ZJ and see what it looks like. I was thinking that I probably should get a seven blade fan, but to tell the truth, I never counted the blades on the ZJ. What vehicle and what year is the 4.0 L in?/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif I condidered that, but I have to be careful around this moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gifbunch. They bounce off the walls a lot and they could cut themselves./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Dave,
It might be better to hold on to that flex fan until the snow bunnies and their RVs come back up north in the spring. They just love those things!! /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

They have the stock fans and clutches at NAPA...I just made that same swap...except it wasn't a flex fan in the Farmjeep...just a regular fixed blade fan.

Measure once, cut twice...or is that the other way around?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Napa, huh.....do you recall what the cost was? And was it a seven-blade fan?/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

The fan was a seven bladed fan. They had it in 18" (stock size, I believe) and 19", same bolt pattern, same hole in middle. I just pulled the old fan and spacer off, bolted the new fan to the clutch, and bolted the clutch to the water pump/pulley. The clutch was $30, and the fan blade was $40. Not cheap, but cheaper than my local Jeep dealers were quoting me. I had looked at a few junkyard fans, but they were all in pretty putrid condition. I feel as though spending a few extra dollars the first time (or even twice as much, in this case) will save me money in the long run.

p.s. about your smoking computer...maybe you could get it that patch, or some nicorette gum /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif Heh heh....that's good...the patch....that's very good./wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif You know, ...everybody should believe in SOMETHING. I believe I'll get me a new fan./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif
/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif BTW I can't figure out how you "farm" in Chicago. Isn't it tough to get the corn planter to go into those sidewalks? /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif I was afraid of that. I never did look at the 4.0 ZJ, but it probably does too./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Now that you got the info you need...
In my younger years I put a brand new, flex fan right behind a $450 modine 4 core radiator.
It never occurred to me that the fan was going to flex so much it ate the radiator at about 9 grand.
As far as I know, that fan is still stuck in the insulation way up on the wall in our old shop, Sort of a trophy to hard experience...

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif I think your Flex-a-lite probably has lots of counterparts all over these here United States as astonished racers pried them out of radiators. It's an idea that SOUNDS good, but well...../wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif
So far, we have only been able to retain the Accel #8140C coil, of ALL the racin' stuff that was lovingly but ignorantly foisted on our poor CJ. The intake, the carb, the chromie stuff that resembled an air cleaner, the hot rod fuel filter, the shroudless radiator, etc, etc, etc....it has all had to go in exchange for stuff that actually works, does some good, and makes the smog gestapo happy./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

speaking of fan shrouds, mine self detonated about 2 months after I bought the jeep, took out the clutch, etc... There was no salvaging the shroud, and for simplicity and price, I put a flex fan on it... I'm sure that my inital cooling problems were because of no shroud, but I haven't been able to find one... all the parts stores say to go junk yards, the junk yards laugh histericly when I ask if they have a Cj in their yard... Am I hopeless, or can I be shrouded in Daytona? ;)

aftermarket, replacement parts, etc...? any low buck stuff to try?

Its doing just fine right now, but I'd like to have the peace of mind that I'm getting a very efficent pull of air through the radiator while wheeling and idling...

I have a shroud for a CJ w/ 2 core rad. It won't fit my 3 core . I was very disappointed after I learned this. I am planning to have one made if I don't run into one. If you are interested let me know.

CJ I might be waaaay off base here but back at the FSJ sight it seems
that a Chevy 454 clutch fan was one of the favs. for the AMC engins.
I would have to look it up .I think I have it saved some where.
It was something about pulling air better around town and on the trail?????
Would you like me to look it up???????

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif By all means.....I have had some 454's, and each had the Hvy cooling. There was just no overheating those engines with a good fan and clutch. I am a big believer in fan clutches for this reason....and the factory KNOWS this too....the HP required to drive a fan goes up as the CUBE of the difference in speed. So, if you double the RPM, you increase the required HP by EIGHT (2 X 2 X 2) As the RPM builds, the fan tries to do more and more work, and it either fails the water pump bearings over time, or it sucks itself into the radiator (flex fans) or it simply pukes away all your hard-earned HP needlessly. I like to have huge fans for slow going with A/C on and climbing, but be able to clutch them out when the water is cooled down once more and the ground speed is up. Does anyone know what the TRUE diameter is for a 304 fan? We don't have a shroud yet, but we are going to get one from Rosser $$$$$$$ when the Jeep is a little farther along./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif
