An amc v-8 would be easyest. It would bolt to he trany but that dont mean it would last. I'm not real familiar with the trany's used in wranglers so i cant help you there much. Alot ofit depends on how much work you are capable of and willing to do. You might consider building the 6 cyl. I have seen poeple get 350 horses out of them and thats almost double what a stock 304 puts out.

AMC hummm what would this run me?

To stay smog legal, the *only* engine which could (perhaps) be used, is a 360 out of a 90/91 grand wagoneer......
Other choiches would be the Chevy 350. Go to Advance Adapters homepage and order the catalog *and* the "Jeep swap manual".
Eve if you don't buy any of their products, there is some good info & it will give you a rough etsimate of what a swap like this involves....

Another "smog legal". and perhaps easier swap would be a Mopar Magnum 5.2 or 5.9. You can use the stock and very modular wiring harness for the fuel injection. A bell housing from a dakota 3.9 v-6 would make this motor bolt to the existing ax-15 tranny. You could use the motor mounts from a ram truck, but would have to wield on some purches.

The only "smog legal" motor he could use in my home state (Missouri) is the 4.0 that's in there now. Anything that didn't come stock in a YJ is looked at as illegal - Mopar or otherwise. Supercharging the 6 is probably the easiest option & would cost about the same as a V-8 swap. Consider that as one of your options.

Ahem, Is your girlfriend going to pay for it all?
Just a joke.

I know of a place here in Florida called the ToyBox that puts AMC 360's in older Jeep CJs with T-176 trannys. The T-176 is a good tranny and s/b able to handle the torque as long as you dont build up the 360 for hi-po.

There are also hi-po cams, intakes, etc that you could add as well getting a decent horsepower increase. That stock 6 is a good motor. I'd keep it.

emissions leal is a relative term. It all depends on where you live. If one of the earlyer posts is true then remind me never to move to MO.

Missouri law currently won't allow any motor that was not offered from the factory. It applies to all vehicles. So, a '32 Ford with a Chevy small-block is "technically" illegal. Now, having said that - what's legal & what you can get away with are two entirely different things. My 1980 Toyota pickup with a VERY warm 408" small-block has passed (I won't say where) for several years in a row. Next year, we get a sniffer in our county. That's the end of that.

TEX has the right idea. Another idea would be to download these posts and present them over a soft candelight dinner when you are having one of those "couples moments" that guys just want to be over with quick. OR... you could get a girlfriend who doesn't give a hoot about engines as long as the thing moves forward and starts every time.

Okay let me clear somethings up. I sed my girl friend wants to do this what I should have sed is I have alomst got her convenced that she should . She likes to og mudding and whats her jeep to look nice too. I guess what Im saying is that I want her jeep to heve the power and the lift to keep up with my Toyota and look as good when I am driving it and not my truck. Most if not all of this she is going to pay for not me.

If her jeep has a 5 speed manual, then swapping to say a Chevy 350 would be easy using an adaptor plate. ThE AX 15 tranny has
held up to many a V8 swap. For the hassle of a swap (I have done several and it ain't easy!) and the expense (which seem to lurk
at every turn) you could beef that 6! Is it a 4.0l or a 4.2l? The 4.0 can be beefed up 50 hp easy with bolt on parts. If big tires are
slowing her down then swap to 4.11 or lower gears. The YJ probably has 3.53's or 3.73's in the differentials. The weak link in your
drivetrain is the axles. Remember that the YJ is a 1/4 ton vehicle. For offroading a YJ the good word is low gearing. Mud bashing
would require some beef at each end. The YJ is a reliable jeep. I've broke 'em, built 'em and broke 'em again.

IMHO

Current jeep: 88 YJ with 4 cylinders and really low gears

Tell your girlfriend that the engine she has has more torque at low RPM's than most V8's, and that's what she wants for off-roading and rock climbing. If she's looking for a drag racer, she should get a Camaro, Mustang, Etc, because that Jeep will kill her if she drives it too fast. Also, she will need another job to pay for the conversion because it will cost her $3000.00 or more.
