Just a small question: Which are the main (in short please) differencies between the old VG30i engine and the VG30E ? Inyection type (SPI vs. MPI?), horsepower ? This, because I want to do a little swap and soembody offers me the VG30i, but I personally don't trust it anymore....any tips on this shopping please ??

The VG30E engine has multipoint fuel injection (and all the associated hardware while the VG30i has throttle body fuel injection (and all its associated hardware). Other than that, I believe they have the same internals. I will get back to you on the horsepower ratings, but they will be different (the the MFI being slightly higher). If you want to swap it with a 4cyl engine, I don't believe the transmissions are the same (ie, it won't bolt up to the new engine).

Thanks rock, they offer me the VG30i engine with transmission + transfer case + electric harness. Sadly this is an auto tranny and I don't like it. I've also heard that a vast mayority of 'em are blowed of excess towing....

If the price is right, then look into getting a new 5-spd transmission since you don't like the auto. The best way to keep an auto tranny in good condition (espcially if towing) is to install an auxillary transmission cooler. Heat kills auto transmissions. 5-spd should be fine but I believe the tow rating is slightly less. Good luck.

The VG30i will bolt right up to whatever transmission you have in your truck. Only thing you have to change to swap the engines is the wire harness, everything else is the same, the blocks are the same so the engine mounts and tranny bolts up with no mods. Personally I dont know why you would want to swap engines. The VG30E is smoother and has more power. The only advantage of the VG30I is that the electrical system is less complicated, so there is less to go wrong and its easier to fix. I have the VG30I in my 89 and the VG30E in my 95 and I think the VG30E is much better, I wouldnt mind swapping a VG30E in my 89.

Thanks Brad, but my swap is from a Z24S (carburated, old style) to a VG30i, I don't think the engine mounts, transmission, transfer case,etc. are the same. The only good thing is that they offer me the whole thing assembled (engine, tranny(auto), transfer casde + harness. I don't think the 5 speed on the Z24S is the same than the VG30i right ? Do you know how much Hp does the VG30i has? I also have a 95Pathfinder with a VG30E 5 speed....aloha

I must not have understood your post. I thought you were going from Vg30E to VG30i. Everything is different with the Z24 and the VG30i. Z24 Transfer case and trans will not bolt to VG30. I am pretty sure the VG30i was rated at 146hp and the VG30e was rated at 153hp.

Here is what I have:

VG30i
horsepower=145@4800 RPM
torque=166@2800 RPM

VG30E
horsepower=153@4800 RPM
torque=180@4000 RPM

As you can see, the torque peaks come at different RPM's. The VG30i is more of a truck engine with the torque peak down low while the VG30E is more of a car engine with the torque peak up high. You would have to look at a dyno graph to see the slope of the torque band though (my guess is that the VG30i is flatter than the VG30E).
