I ordered my "chrome plated steel valve cover" (not because I like chrome but because it was $60 and metal as opposed to the $160 aluminum or $30 plastic) from Leon Rosser today. Said it came with a gasket and "3M cement". Whatever that is. I called my mechanic and asked him about putting this cover on. I've got a huge oil leak and he advised the existing cover was warped. But he tells me NOT to put silicon on the gasket ANYWHERE. Says that silicon should never be used with a gasket, it just makes thing worse (whatever THAT means!). He says to use 3M weatherstripping adhesive or carpeting adhesive if I need to ensure that the gasket doesn't move during installation. Then I called a buddy who has built his old chevy 350 from scratch and he laughed at me and my mechanic! He says he always uses silicone, on both sides of the gaskets on his 350.
Who is right? I don't want this thing to leak, ever again!
TIA
