How strong is the NP231, what will it hold up too? I've got the 32 spline tailshaft in mine already but with my 2.5l I need more gearing. I don't want to spend the money on a 4to1 kit and the 2low kit and blow the thing up in a couple years when I have more engine and more rubber under it. Its crazy what they want for the TeraLow kit and I'm wondering if I should just save my money for an Atlas 4.3 or a flipped Dana 300 with 4to1 gears. I'd appreciate any input and/or stories of busting a NP231.
Thanks, Aaron

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into an NP231 for strength. I'm not too crazy over the case configuration. It tends to explode. That's not a good thing when you're climing a rock or a hill.

You can beef the darned things up, but then there go the costs. For the dollar invested, were the project mine, I'd opt for a flipped Dana 300 with a TeraLow (or the like) kit.

bucky007 broke the housing on his with a 4.0L and 35's broke the front output and cracked the case if i understood correctly.....

some other people have had them hold up for a very long time though

heres stuff i was looking at, in anticipation of it ever going bad

http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/transfer_cases.htm

has info on the D300 flip and some other stuff

the Bronco D20 + klune-V is pretty cool, shorter than a 231..but $$$$$
