I would like to upgrade the 3 spd manual in my 78 CJ5(304), what model 4 spd would be a direct replacement and can I use the same xfer case. If a good direct replacement is not available, please recommended a good after market setup/kit.

T18 is the way to go, but pretty hard to find one from another CJ ( the only one that will be short enough) you can find Fords, and FSJ T18s under $400 but it costs a few hundred more to convert them...

the T18 is strong as heck, and the T18a has a first gear of 6.32:1 good granny 1st gear for crawling and such..

Hey John,

I am doing this conversion now. I had a junk factory T-150 3speed and i am swapping in a T-18a now. Unfortunately, i was NOT on this BBS when i picked up my T-18a and ended up buying one that need to have a short shaft kit installed. The short shaft kit ($185) and a complete rebuild kit ($150) have both been ordered from Hicks4x4 and the tranny is currently getting a rebuild. The URL i found most usefull in reasearch this was Kirk Beasleys swap. Chck it out at: http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/convtrans/cjt18/ Depending on what 3 Speed you have in the now you may even be able to use your same bellhousing. Feel free to email me off list at: [email protected]

Good Luck

I got lucky and was able to purchase a NP435 out of a 3/4 ton Ford PU for $50.00. The bolt pattern will fit the Jeep bellhousing but a kit is needed for adaptation to the t-case. I've run NP435's since the mid-70's and never had a problem. I couldn't find a T-18. The 435 has a nice granny low first gear. Good luck!

generally the NP435 is abit long for a stock CJ5 after you ad on the adapter to a transfercase ( isnt it like 5-8 inches), I wanted to go this route too !!

It seemed cheaper, until I figured in the rear adapter, and the missing length..

You can find T18as, short and ready for a CJ, for under $600, you just have to look..

I was paging through the Jeep Owners Bible by Moses Ludel tonite. On page 307 he does have a photo of a NP435 conversion in a 1981 CJ5, so maybe it would be an option to consider.
