Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

No budding good question

For a person with just slitly modfied motor and a daily driver nothing. Other than maybe ware and tear on the shaft and bushings.and 20 year old springs and wieghts for your advance and diaframe maybe nothing

But for me and others who like to push there motor to the FRAG OUT POINT!!!!! they have alot of problems to complicat in words for me to typr LOL Like static air gap which cause you to loose spark. vartions in cap rotor linment, Not having your advance take off at the get go. relying on what your factory vacum pot pulls it in at . timing fluctuation. gear stripping but i havent seen a couple of cases of that and they could tear a steel anvil up with a rubber hammer relying on a close to 20 year old springs and wieghts in your dist and diaframe.
I think that about sums it up

And yes if you dont no it buy now i cant spell LOL!

which has been my major beef with the factory dist. and for me hes also going to lock down the vacum advance at predetermined Degree and get reed of the pot all togther. Speecken of that Sarge What do you think your total dist adavnce Is ? just wanting to compare.
Hes going to look at bronze dist gears see if he can adpat one to fit . and then thiers the other options hes going to look at also new bushings.spiral roll pins.and seeing if thiers a way to make the cap stay stile.and just maybe a Hall-Effect sytem he said he would look at it ALL. I talked to him for a hour today on the phone He seems to be a NO BS kind of Guy . HEs Motto is Keep it simple i agree he sells a igtion sytem with only a 2 wire hook up Thats 4 less that the msd . Im going to get a package deal and try it Hes box coil and the reworked dist.

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

Mel is suppose to be a good guy when it comes to tuning a distrib.. He also does a setup for the Land Cruisers which converts it to pointless. I thought it looked like the Pertronix system so I called them up. Guess what it is the Pertronix system but relabled as one of Mel's systems. On another website they make it sound as if he invented this setup. hehehe.... guess anything can be said to make a buck or two. Anyway I would be interested to see what he could do for those that arent tunning out for max performance and what reliability and longevity.
oh and how much it will cost

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

reliability and longevity
humm i thought thats what i was havung him work on

for just the rotor phazing and for the dist tweaking he qute me around 50 to 60$ and for the complete kit he said 200$ to 300$ like i said sent him 2 be there friday we well see what he can do .

are you sure its not Pertronix relableing his? LOL!! guess i will have to ask him that friday when he calls I guess someone bought the rights form one or the other LOL.
And yes if you dont no it buy now i cant spell LOL!

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

cool dude that works for me.

on the Pertronix.... You can give them a call and ask. Not trying to make mel look bad. I havent delt with him or his product yet. But when I saw his product being sold as Mel's Ignition and it looks identical to the Pertronix I thought I'd give them a call. They have been selling their for years. Big in the aircooled vdubs. Anyway when I spoke with them about it the person said yes it is their system and that they pretty much let mel do with it as he wants. Guess they sale enuff to him to not worry about it.

let us know...im game for a rebuild that's an improvement over stock.

MEL is definately the man when it comes to fixing problem distributors!!!!!!!! I have had 3 Land Rover Series 2a's in my life and all 3 now have Mel's distributors on them and they are as reliable as hell!!! LUCAS ignitions just plain SUCK!!!Out at dawn back by dark, SOMETIMES!!! Glad you found him Doug, it never even dawned on me to ask him! DOH!!

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

Well, if you are going to go that far, why not a crank trigger system? LOL. I used to have a guy like Mel in my area, but the old sob up and died on me. The last ignition he built for me still runs great, over 120k on it. Total timing for the zuk motors as far as I can tell is 38-40 degrees, including the vacuum advance. I've had the air gap set anywhere from almost closed to way past factory specs, and no gain in coil load or dwell. The stock distributors are definitely inconsistent, my last one worked great until the bushings finally wore out. I have yet to find one that works as well. Good luck,
Sarge

If it aint broke , I can still fix it...

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

please keep us posted ...i would like to upgrade my dist.
i beleive that my missing out at idle is dist. related...not the s.p. wires,or vacume leak,or the carb(its done the same thing with 2 diffrent carbs.not the cap or rotor either . so i would like to look into any other option then a brand new one.
thanks for doing all the foot work dparker.
zukikid

wow ...it still fits out the garage !!!!

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

Well got off the Phone with mel today he's been tryn to catch me but was busy with the wife last week .

So heres the needgretty.

Hes checked the phasing of rotor to terminal on distributor cap oN both the 87 and 91 dist i sent him

Both are pretty much perfect. he said his only seen a hand full of dist that good . Off buy 1to 2 degrees

The advacne even shocked me it only goes to 5000 and it hits the stops .Going to have to make it go higher
for those of you who dont push your motor of 6000rpm i would not mess with it but im picky

But the 91 goes a litlle father which is good to no for those of you want to swap for a litle better dist

he hasnt tore in too them yet too see if any things wore out .

but 1 thing he said hes going to do for sure is too wire both them witrh weather pac seal ends and wire strait to the coil .
he explained it to me but went over my head anyways its better that way.Plus make me a new harness from which ever box i run his or the msd's igtion box to coil

just thought i let you no.

Sarge got a email from hugh today No matter who i go to im going to be walkin bowllegged.

Unless rob can get that scrap titaum he throughs away that would be sweet Rob the Rod man just dont piss him off Or make sure you have a mouth piece in LOL!!!

Re: Sarge and others Who where lookin for better dist.

Well this kinda relates to my other post about my motor but the mechanic said my distributer was pulling to much and that it was probably hurting my top-end he thought maybe the bushings or something was going bad in mine. So if I sent this guy a distributer what would it cost for him to fix it all up so that I can get up into those higher rpm's. Forgive me if I am not asking the right things or explaining it wrong I'm just not real familiar w/motors.
