The past few days my Jeep has been making a "whining sound" when I start her up. It usually goes away after a few moments, and doesn't come back again until I go to start it up. Except tonite, when I went out to get it, the sound never went away. It's a "whine", and I'm hearing it from the pass. floorboard. That's at least where I think it to be coming from. I'm kind of leaning towards the transmission to be the source, but I'm not for sure. Tonite, it made the whining or whistling sound when I would go to slow down, and sometimes when I gave it gas. I also noticed some oil leaking near a leak of coolant. It's near where the heater core is, but it's not coming from there, I know. So, what do you all think it could be? Thanks for any help.

Does it go away if you shift into neutral? If it doesn't it probably isn't the tranny. Could it be a hole in the exhaust manifold? I had a crack in mine that sounded like this - it lessened as it warmed up - not sure why.

What kind of oil is leaking? Trans fluid or engine oil? Is one of your belts squeeling? Have you crawled under your jeep to see where it's leaking from? Did you ever figure out where the coolant leak was comming from? Have you checked your trans fluid to see if it's filled up all the way, nice and bright red, and smells "normal"? Check to see if there are any particles in it. All those things will help diganose the problem. I think i remember that your jeep used to leak trans fluid right? Did you ever get that fixed? You might just be low on trans fluid because something is leaking.

Yep, sounds like the same symptom I had before when my tranny went. It sounded like the power steering pump, so I ignored it. It only did it when I started it up, then it went away. Well, the day it actually fried, it sounded much worse and didn't go away even after I put it in gear. Then, I realized it was coming from the tranny.

I figured I would at least get it home so I could check it out. I only got about two miles when it started slipping. It would go in and out of gear like it was low of fluid. I checked that and it was fine. Nice and red, didn't smell burned. So, I figured I would limp it home. The farther I went, the less it would go, until I finally had to call a tow truck.

The weird thing is, I let it sit until the weekend so I could put it in my shop to work on. I drove it in there, which is on the other end of my house, through about a foot of snow. It still whined, but didn't slip. That's the weird part. I'm sure if I drove it very far it would have done the same thing.

Sorry, I just realized I'm taking over your post. My point was your symptom sounds like mine and this is what you MAY have to look forward to. Hopefully, it's something else.

Let us know what you find. Good luck.

OK, the shop called me and siad that what they suspect my problem being is the Tourqe Convertor Clutch Sylaniod Locking up and making a whining noise. ALso I had a very leaky Intake manifold. But the problem with my whinny tranny was that 20 dollar part.
