Don't know about your area but here Reg-1.37, Plus-1.47, Super-1.57 and Diesel is 1.4X. We can still get 5 gallons of water for $1.00 I think I might pull my jeep around with an electric golf cart or about 200 remote control cars.

Yes! It can get higher. Expect about another 25 cents a gallon before the US makes a deal with IRAQ for oil, and that will get the attention of the OPEC countries.
In the mean time, I'm looking for a 4 cyl to put in the jeep....

The cheapest we hav ehad regular all of the last year was 1.18 for just a week or so. Otherwise it has been 1.29 to 1.39 for junk regular./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

I filled up my Taurus yesterday for $21.00 at $1.49. I get to do that 2 or 3 times a week. I'll have to get a part time job to buy gas to go to work with ! ? ! ?

Oh, well. We it could be worse. Gas costs a heck of a lot more in Europe, I hear.

I just read in the news that they don't expect prices to fall until the summer. Gas here runs about $1.50 (87 octane) for a gallon of the stuff. They expect it to go up to $2.00! Pretty soon a gallon of milk will be cheaper, I can here the cows moo-ing. Loosnut, you are right about the European gas prices. If I remember right, a gallon of gas was about $4.50 a gallon (they go by the liter). I drove a convertable Citroen in France a couple years back. You have to remember they have trains that go almost everywhere, so they are less dependent on the automobile.

this makes me think really hard on my long term project, a small electric 4x4, a sami would probably be the best compromise between strong/light...

just think crawl those rocks with just a faint hum/whine, no roaring engine...
IMMENSE torque at any RPM...

someday...

Think how much fun we have listening to all that NOISE from our engines>>> I know you are jus kiddin' 'bout that lectric stuff. I know I am still on probation with this bulletin group, but lectric stuff???? Probably gotta get all new info on how to wire a battery system, wire sizes, solar cells (hopped up of course), and all other sorts o'stuff. Lets just keep that lectric stuff to ourselves..Please...

Hey OzarkJeep,
I recall an article in C&D magazine a while back where they tested the GM electric car. I believe the torque ratings were at a maximum at 0rpm and the torque dropped off considerably after that. I believe the HP rating of the motor was 74. They said in the article the acceleration was lousy also but for rock crawling, that wouldn't be much of a problem. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

PerJ, you're in a different world (literally)./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif How's the weather?

Fuel (as opposed to gas) is $1.45 a gallon for low, and about $0.10 each grade above that. Diesel has come down from $2.20 to $1.89 (wooohooooo, break out the Oreos!). And summer? In a place called Winter Harbor do you think it's EVER summer?

As a side note, my older brother and I used to discuss an alternate method of getting the vehicles out of the woods when the engine quit. The best method we came up with (this was awhile ago, like 15-20 years), was to mount a sprocket on the front or rear axle (or driveshafts) with a Briggs motor attached, (kinda like the Rokon Trailblazers or my favorite, the Hodoka Wombat). The chain would be left off and installed when needed, tensioned by a motorcycle tensioner. Using different size sprockets would help increase the torque. Hey, it'd get you home. How come I can remember that but I can't remember what we were drinking at the time...

hey i just found some turbine engines for sale at the DRMO here on my base.. mm.. wonder how much work it would be to install that instead of my 401.. im sure i could get a friend that worked in the refueling department.. and get my hands on some jp-5... mmmm.. now that would make some noise for us to hear on the trails.. probably cheaper fuel prices as well..

Next thing you know someone is going to start making plans for a pedal-powered rockcrawler. PUH-LEASE! Pedal power is strictly for the MUD babey! Now a pedal powered generator for the electric Sami...THATS a rock setup for sure!

What about propane? Is a lot cheaper, and actually better at low end torque. You lose high-end power, but c'mon, we're talking jeeps here! I guess that wouldn't be good for a mudrunnner or such vehicle but for rockcrawling it sounds like a good idea. Plus its like fuel-injection in that it'll run at all crazy angles, no float bowl to worry about. The only problem is that the tanks are freaking HUGE.
The coolest thing I found out is that you can still run a converted engine on gas. It runs like crap, but it'll get you home. I'd put a 5 gallon tank under the passenger seat like an old jeep, as a reserve emergency tank. What do you guys think?

I can feel with you. I'm in Manitoba, Canada and am paying $0.66.9/litre right now. That's $2.52.9/gallon. While this is still less that $1.10/litre, it is expected to hit at least $1.00/litre before/if it goes down.
