Has anyone done the U-bolt flip (instead of U-bolt skid plates) on a CJ-7? Wondering where you got it, how it worked out,
how much it cost, & what happens to the lower shock mount pin? Thanks for any info.

I haven't done it but here is a link on the subject.

My first Jeep was a CH-47 "Chinook"

I did this as well. It was easy and seems to work well. I had to relocate the shock mounts, but after the front spring move, it was simple.

Rick, I did mine with the kit from 4XDoctor. I've been very happy with it. http://www.fourxdoctor.com

3/4... talk to me about moving the shocks... I wanted to get the 4x doctor flip(want in one hand, sh*t in the other... which fills up first?)/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif but they're bucks...

Is it a matter of just rewelding them? To the axle? How did you compensate for the flat of the springs to the curvature of the u-bolts?

Thanks!

Moving the shock mounts out of the way on the front axle is easy, make a new bracket using 1/4" steel and match the curve of the axle tubes. You need to raise the front mount so that you dont lose any travel, you can torch off the stock mounts and weld on mounts from a Ford F250 about $15 each side. The rear shock mounts are a little more trouble if you want to keep your travle, but once done it works great.

to compensate for the curvature in the u-bolts and make them mount prefect on the leaf springs you need a piece of metal that is made for it, i got mine a the junk yard with the u-bolt mounting plates, you can't really see them in the pictures but the piece of metal is 2 1/2" x @5 " and is between the u-bolts and the springs, (just check out some fullsize trucks with this style of U-bolts and you will see, very simple)
as far as mounting the shocks, you will need to make/buy/get some mounting brackets (order new or cut off an old axle maybe/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif) and have them welded on, if your not a welder i'm sure you could find a shop that would do it for pretty cheap. the important part is getting them in the correct place, many locations will work you just don't want your shocks to "bottom out" or "fully extent" while wheeling (here's a secret, alot of factory and (lift kit supplied) shocks do this /wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif)

I just called Dynatrac about their u-bolt flip kit. Their price is $139 per axle and includes new shock mounts. In case anyone wanted to know.
