Ok guys....and gals...here are a couple of pictures of the custom u-bolt job I did.

U-bolts: I bought the full set, custom bent for my jeep..$59 including tax and shipping. Thats cheaper than buying stock ones from Pep Boys.

Bottom Plates: Made them out of stainless. I don't want to worry about them getting rusty after I drag them along rocks.

Top Plate: Made them out of 3/16 C Channel steel, welded sides on them and then cut out to the shape of the axle tube using a plasma cutter. 3/16 Is a little thin and started to bend when I torqued down the u-bolts, so I plan to make new ones out of 1/4" steel.

John,
With a Spring Over Suspension I dont have to worry about the U bolt flip, but that is a very clean set up. What kind of mods did you do to the front and rear shock mounts to move the lower mounts out of the way also?

John, that is a nice looking set up! Who did you order custom bent u-bolts from? And where do you find that c-shaped steel? Too cool! /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Check out this article from this month's ORC Page 2. I dont see why you couldn't just use one of these, cut in half, if you can't get ahold of any C-Channel. C-Channel is pretty easy to find though, thats one of the reasons so many people make bumpers out of it. DDawg16- those are some very trick mounts, I love them!

I got the u-bolts from National Spring...same place I got the teflon pads from.

The c-channel came from the scrap bin by the chop saw....I'm lucky in that, while I write software, the company I work for builds lots of big heavy metal vessels (autoclaves)...hence, I have access to Mig, TIG and arch welders...not to mention a huge break and metal shear. Last night I was practicing my TIG welding on my new set of front u-bolt mounts.

As for the shock mounts, I bought brackets from 4 Wheel Wholesale...they were about $15 a pair...cheaper than my time.

FYI...I looked at using something like in the pic, but it needs to be at least 3 1/2" wide. All we had in stock was either 3" or 6". When you see what I'm doing with the front brackets, you will understand why I used the material I did.

I used the spring plates from an early 80's Dodge 2WD, like the writeup suggested, and they worked well. I also go U-bolts from a local brake shop, they were $5 each and they bend them there. The attached pic is a little far away, so I hope to have a writeup completed in the next few weeks.
