This is from an acuction currently on ebay.

Description
NOS Jeep original top to fit 1967-68 Jeepster Commando Continental Convertible. It is top skin only, no hardware. Color is white pebble grain. As seen in the photos, this top WILL NOT fit a standard Jeepster convertible, which is what it was sold to me for.

Are there two different types of convertables, or does he mean soft top.???

thanks for your help

There were two types of true convertibles. Model 8701 and 8702. The 01 has the continental style bumper with a fiberglas cowl at the back of the convertible top. The 8702 is missing the cowl and the rear tailgate is functional and can be open and closed...standard bumper.

I also saw that ad and I don't know what the top was that he was trying to sell, but what I saw in the picture wouldn't fit any type of Jeepster convertible. Looks like he got taken and is trying to pass the pain on to the next sucker in line.

Nice looking jeepster.
I do believe that some where down the line someone removed the back fiberglass panel, because a 8701 should have it. Most likely so they could open the tail gate.
Thats the only thing we hated about our 67 8701, no way to get luggage behind back seat easily.

John, this isn't goingto help much but...this winter i'm haveing a top made for our 67'(soft top not a convert like yours) and since it has a different attachment to the front header and a tallish roll/fashion bar I have to have a custom one built. Luckly one of the guys in the trim shop at work also does it at home(i'm at GM Design Staff he does interiors/tops for some of the show vehicles). If yous doesn't fit check the local street rod guys or if your close to water the local boat canvas shop. Yes, I know it won't be cheep i've been quoted prices from $900-$1300 for the top and don't like the work from the lower bidder so the guy from work will get the top. You have a great looking jeep if you were in S.E. Michigan I could point you at a couple guys. Think high end street rods and expensive boats they don't tollerate cheap work neither should you. If your jeep was worth a grand i'd go cheap, but its not so find a custom shop that makes you happy. If i'm payn' i'm going to be happy make them redo it. sorry to hear of your problem.

Cheers
Tony

thanks for the great info. Did the 01 and O2 have the same top? If they did my only thought was that the top he is selling looks like an original jeepster (1948-50) top. Is the o2 what they are reffering to as an austire convert? For some reason I can't load that picture on our history section.

What is the purpose of the fiber glass deck?

Thanks for your time

George...first start by looking at your VIN on the firewall. If it starts with 8701, then it is a "Deluxe" true convertible and was only built with the rear trunk deck and continental spare. If it starts with 8702 then it is NOT a "Deluxe" but an "Austere" convertible and was not built with the rear deck/spare combo. The 8701 and 8702 were optionally equipped with a power ram system. The 8701 preceded the 8702. The deck was for asthetics and Chris is bang on with the other details. DO NOT confuse the 2 convertible models with the roadster (open body..waggy with the hard top removed). The roadster uses the Kayline type soft top similar to Jeep CJ series. I have a Deluxe 8701 with glass rear window (the austere was plastic normally) and my top was purchased thru a supplier on the east coast about 3yrs ago. A friend of mine here in town just bought the same thing about 6 mths ago thru a local convertible top shop who ordered it out of America, again the east coast. They ran around $700 US I believe for the lastest one with glass window installed in it. That is skin only and not installed on the 8701. Dan PS..the 8701 therefore had a shorter rear canvas area than the 8702. 8701 top attached to the front edge of the rear deck while the 8702 ran all the way to the top edge of the tailgate.
