LET ME GET YOU SOME PICTURES OF MINE IT USES STOCK DANA 18 TWIN STICK LEVERS AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS ORIGINAL IT WILL WORK GREAT I'M PLAYING WITH DETENT SPRINGS AT THIS POINT AS THAT IS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH GOING FROM THE U SHIFT IS THE DETENTS AREN'T STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD IT IN LOW GEAR SO I'M IN THE PROCESS OF FINDING A DIFFERENT DETENT SPRING TO USE .

Ryan: That's the same problem I ran into - mine won't stay into low gear. Usually the front pops out. Not always, but enough to be annoying. The detent spring is internal, isn't it? Or can it be replaced without disassembling the transfer case? I was actually thinking about building a cable shifter with lock-outs on the shifter levers themselves. Wouldn't look stock, but it would cure the problem and I could mount it back between the seats for easy access.

A bungee cord works pretty good on mine although I haven't noticed it wanting to come out of gear since I installed the twin sticks.
That little nasty incident in Blairsville, GA (see Oct. 2004 Jeepster calendar picture
) cured me of trusting it to stay put.

Wow, that's a lot simpler than I had though. Am I correct in assuming that it is possible to do it in all years with everything still in the vehicle?
Also, for those of us without welder access, is there a kit available anywhere?
thanks,

I got mine at 4Wheeler's Supply and it was as straightforward an installation as it comes. There was a good thread on here about it too.
The only complaint that I have is that it rattles. I've put grease and rubber bands on the shifter linkages and it still just jingles as you go down the road. It's not too bad at Christmas
but the rest of the year I'd soon not hear it.

Before I swapped in my Dana 300, I used a shaft coller (? - brass coller with a set screw to hold it in place on a shaft) and a spring to stop the rattling you are describing. Worked well, cheap and simple.

Rich,

Other than pulling the tranny cover (to yank the old crap shifter out), you should be able to do it without removing anything. If you opt to build one, there's dozens of folks in ChapelHill/Raliegh with welders that'd hook you up. Just contact some of the guys on NC4x4...what little welding it would take shouldn't cost you over a couple
