Yaaayyy!, fired up the jeepster a month or so ago when the weatherman told me snow was coming. So what if the inspection is 3 years out of date, none of the lights work, the brakes are shaky and the steering REAL loose. That's the way it's always been. But of course my husband objected to the brake light/ turn signal issue!
Sooo... after removing steering wheel, finding test light, fumbling under the dash to find wires that some idiot replaced with wires all the same color (20 yeas ago... I remember that dash fire well! Whole 'nother story!), I determined that the turn signal switch was bogus. The Jeepsterman had one, but just for kicks I called my local jeep dealer. He not only was able to get a replacement, he beat jeepsterman's price! (there are some advantages to being a member of the fairer sex). Just put it in, and fishing the wires through the steering coloumn wasn't as bad as I expected. Ta Da! All lights functional. The better half will probably get hinky about lack of inspection and liscense plate next. Sigh.

Love this forum, I'm sure glad I found y'all.

jcp, where you live it would be good for you to get acquainted with ryan "the jeep guy" at www.thejeepguy.com he is in portland or. and is a great resource for parts for our rides. i was lucky on my turn signal switch it was just dirty and some tuner cleaner fixed it. it sure can mess up your brake lights though. good luck, jos.

I've visited this site several times for research, but I just started work on my commando recently, so this is my first post. Probably first of many.
I've got a 70 commando with a turn signal/break light problem as well. On the passenger side, the turn signal works, but the brake light doesn't. I pulled off the steering wheel and I think the problem maybe in the turn signal switch, and I was kind of curious what prices you were quoted on your switch. I called a jeep dealer and he claimed he could get it for about $90. I'm going to try to play with the one I've got for a little bit, but I was wondering if that quote was close to yours. Also, if you've seen my issue before and have any advice, it's welcome. Thanks.

Jason,
I paid $80.25 including tax. The parts guy cut me a break.
Jeepsterman's got them, but he wanted more and doesn't take credit cards. I mainly checked with the dealer because I wanted it NOW and didn't want to wait for my check to clear with the Jeepsterman. Bye the way, He's got a TON of parts!

Yeah, I had funky things going on too. No brake lights, etc. The new switch took care of my problems. (or at least that particular one!)
Good luck!

i was lucky, i just had to spray electronic tuner in under the steering wheel into the turn signal switch and it fixed it. i think i will have to do this peridiocally though. i am going to install a grant steering wheel in the near future though and would like to get a new switch. i am unable to find one in my napa sources, just a switch repair kit. do you still have the part number on the switch you bought from the dealer? i have a dealer that i purchase crysler parts from mainly to resell to customers so i should be able to get it. glsd it worked for you.

Might try www.justjeepsters.com . He's got the turn signal switch listed. Given your problems with brake lights and turn signals, I'd check grounds and wiring before replaceing the switch. You should be able to take the switch out and check it with an ohm meter and see if it works or not. My guess is that it is wiring, not the switch.
