I am going to get an engine tune up soon. Has anyone done this yet? What exactly do they do? And how much will it run me? Thanks

its prettysimple, fairly cheap, and kinda time consuming on the vortecs. New cap & rotor, wires, plugs, oil, lube, all filters, check/replace things like the PCV valve, EGR valve, and all hoses/tubing/belts. You can also ceck brake pads/shoes/disks/drums, rear end oil & gasket (and check fornt transfer case/cv boots). They also recomend compression-checking the radiator and checking the air conditioning system for proper freon levels. Add some fuel system & injector cleaner and a top it with a silly air freshiner for the cab and your done.

What year truck are we talking about?
Why are you having someone else do it??? Is this a warranty type situation???
If not, just do it yourself you will save a "ton o' money" and get to know your truck a little better!
There is no magic to a tune up, anyone can do it with the most basic tools.

I'm doing a gtradual tune up on mine. every weekend i do something else. this weekend i think it'll be cap and rotor. then wires the next week. everything else is done already. piss on the A/C. when i replace the belt I"m gonna use a non-ac belt and just forget about my a/c system all together. it doesn;t work now and i don;t want to pay a ton to fix it. i have to roll the windows down in the summer anyways. it hurts my body if i don't. damn subs.

I did a pretty thorough tune up fall of 2000. Oil and filter (I use Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 and Mobil 1 filters, not cheap/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif), new Autolite spark plugs, new tranny fluid(Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, again not cheap) and filter, drained and refilled transfer case (yep, Mobil 1 synthetic ATF again), drained and refilled both axles (Mobil 1 full synthetic 75W85 oil and some GM limited slip goo for the rear, how'd you guess/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif), new Bosche oxygen sensor, couple other sensors, cleaned various things, and had the power steering fluid and brake fluid systems flushed and refilled with new fluid by my buddy's garage. I did everything but those last two because I didn't know how to do either or have anywhere to dispose of their fluids. Total cost to me was about $300, even with all the "top of the line stuff", parts counter guy looked at me like I was crazy, but happily./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I had asked my buddy with the garage how much to do all of that, and cutting me a deal, he said $600-700./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif No thanks, and besides, I felt better because I know I can do all of that stuff again./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Hi guys, I want to drain and refill both axels and transfer case. After i drain it how do I know how much to refill?
Do I just refill it all the way to the top or is there a marker? One more question, how ofter do u change the tranny fluid, transfer case, and front and rear axel fluid?
Thanks for all the replies.

P.S. Took some pics of my truck yesterday and will TRY to post them as soon as i get them developed.
It is also chromed out like BIG BLUE'S Z!!!

yeah you're right i had oil and a filter in there too. i forgot aboutt hat. still figure 13 or so for the oil stuff and then its still 65 for the plugs. plainum is either expensive or i took it up the ass to protect that damned OBDII. I'm afraid of it.

True. The biggest steal i almost fell for but didnt, was that after the yukons lease was up in Jan 2000, the lease company wanted $26000 for the truck with 43,000 miles. I said forget that. I will give you 23, and if you dont except, i will walk away. Well, 23 was good enough for them. I wish it wasnt, cause i do like the two door hoe's alot better than 4 doors.

Don't know if it'll help, but I just did a tune up on my '97 Vortec 350 and have a list of all the GM parts and the prices I paid:
Plugs-------list-$8.32ea paid-$5.20ea Total $41.60
Wire Kit----list-$130.81 paid-$81.76 Total $81.76
PCV Valve---list-$ 3.63 paid-$ 2.26 Total $ 2.26
Fuel Filter-list-$ 18.54 paid-$11.59 Total $11.59
Rotor-------list-$ 11.98 paid-$ 7.49 Total $ 7.49
Cap---------list-$ 42.27 paid-$26.43 Total $26.43
I did get the parts through a friend who is a GM Technician at his discount, but I think you could still get them discounted at the counter. Total cost with tax for the parts was $181.40 It wasn't tough doing the tune up and took me about 4 hours total including lube, oil change and cleaned/ reoiled the K&N filter. I pay $2.73 for an AC/Delco oil filter and $.98 a quart for Mobil 5w30 (not Synthetic)oil at WalMart. I still want to change the fluids in the diffs and transfer case.
Also, I flushed the cooling system but that seemed to start more problems. I had to replace the fitting on the intake manifold. (The one that always breaks) and then after flushing the cooling system, I got a slight leak from the intake gaskets and had to replace them. That is very time consuming, but not terribly difficult. So be prepared for these problems when you change/ flush the cooling system.
Hope this might help. Tom.

I don't know about the $80 spark plugs, even at the list price of $8.32 each it only totals $66.56
