I'm looking at a new stereo for my '90 YJ and saw the Tuffy Security/Stereo Consoles. Anybody use these to put their stereos in so the low lifes can't steal them?

I read a report in one of the 4x4 mags that said they were pretty good.

I bought one a few years ago after some jerk tried to steal my radio. Don't know about the one for the YJ but the one for my CJ went in easy, secures my sterio and alot of other junk in the main console. I am thinking about getting the tuffy trunk to secure the rest of my jeep stuff.

I've had a Tuffy center console for about 3 years now, since someone decided to "borrow" my radio. I doubt that anyone will be able to break into it, and it's got a CD player in it. The only thing I've noticed since having it is to make sure you DON'T SPILL ANY MOUNTAIN DEW on top of it with the lid open. Stereos don't seem to like the caffeine.

It costs about $200, if my memory is correct. I also have the Tuffy glove compartment, but it only comes in black.

of course you could save yourself $180 and do the Ammo can thing. Ive got one installed in the CJ and am working on teh one for the chick's YJ. I like the ability to paint it whatever color. you can even buy some vinyl and padding and screw it on top if you wanted a more asthetically pleasing look. Secure, the radio fits in perfectly, and there room for an amp if you want one, as well as the kitchen sink!

On a good note for tuffy, a while back some kids set a guys jeep on fire, and when the fireman were putting it out or examinging it afterwards (not sure on details) but they were trying to open it with an axe and I dont think they got it. Thats a pretty strong console.

I ordered mine through 4 Wheel Drive Hardware, phone # is
1(800) 333-5535. Part number for a 1990 Wrangler Tuffy Deluxe Stereo Security Console is 033(specify color). The color codes are 01(Black), 09(Charcoal), and 37(Spice). So if you want the charcoal, your part # would be 033-09. Some drilling is required. They'll probably send you a catalog for Jeeps, also.
Price? $239.95, according to the early Spring catalog.

the tuffy box is good, but its not like a safe...
a couple weeks ago the lock failed on mine so I got the air hammer out of the back... 2 min and the lock was off.... of course.. I think you might notice a thief with an air hammer at 3 am....
