Trip meter won\'t reset?

I've tried searching for help on this one, no luck:

My trip meter won't reset to all zeroes no matter how hard or how many times I push on it. For a while there, if I just drove a bit and tried again, I could get all the digits to eventually go to zero, but that trick doesn't work any more. When I push the button, I can get the digits to twitch a bit, but they settle right back where they started. I've removed the cone-shaped rubber boot on the reset plunger but that didn't help.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this without pulling the cluster? I'm temped to pump some silicone lube in the reset hole and hope, but I've resisted so far. And if I do pull the cluster, can I even get inside the gauge to fix anything?

The odometer and the trip meter both seem to accumulate miles just fine.

This whole issue has become urgent as my gas gauge is not that accurate anymore (although I did find fixes for that using the search).

Any help is appreciated!

I have to push mine at an angle to get it to work . Maybe you can try that ?

Thanks for the hint, Sammi-d! I'll give it a try.

And I further note that after four years of hanging out here, that last post finally got me promoted from "Stranger". Sheesh!

I have had several to do that. Pull the front cover, then pull the glass off. Be careful the glass can break. pull the needle off it. remove 2 screws ,then remove the face of the speedometer. I use a cleaneer spray on it like a electronic degreaser. Then resprayed it with a light lub. So far all mine now work good. Then just reverse the order. It bad if the gas hand dont work right and you have to use the trip to gauge the gas and it dont work like you want it to.

If you have a late model, I have a good speedo you may have that works well........

Re: Trip meter won\'t reset?

Well, Sammi-D, I just tried pushing the reset plunger at every conceivable angle, and the number wheels still just jiggle nervously instead of resetting. Sounds like I'm going in!

Thanks for the disassembly tips, Steve. Wish me luck! The last time the four gauge bezel screws were loose, the bezel was well stuck to the glass. Are you suggesting they should separeate easily? It's an early 88 model, with round air vents. Do your instructions still apply?

Thanks VERY much for the offer on replacing the cluster, Crow. I don't think early 88 qualifies as a late model though, does it? But if I can't get it fixed, I may be in the market for a replacement.

I may have to try all this after the weekend: daughter number 1 is lobbying hard for a trip to Hollister Saturday. May she never outgrow that!

Re: Trip meter won\'t reset?

Good and timely thread! My 86 does the same thing. I'll follow the disassembly instructions above sometime soon and post pics if I get the time.

Ahem - if there was a FAQ section here, this thread would be a good candidate for addition....

No, it won't matter either would will do it. I have cleaned then both with good results. I even recal the speedometer while I was there using a gps systems. My miles might be off but the mph are right with the gps.

Re: Trip meter won\'t reset?

Is it possible to hijack my own thread? Did you recalibrate the speedo by pulling the needle off as discussed elsewhere on the board, or do you have an even more clever approach?

Thanks in advance!

Dowery, I put that info on this board a while back. I don't know how to send it to you. Do a search on speedometer and it should come up under ka4yqi. and I added a picture of what is done to get it right. I dont know what size tires that you can it right for. I got my adjusted for 30 and 215. The 30's speedometer was fastest than the 215's Go figure..

Re: Trip meter won\'t reset/Speedo recalibration?

Bingo! I searched and found your photo of how to adjust the speedo.
Very nice, and it looks like it's a real fix! For others' reference, it's in the thread titled

"P235/75/15 Now Speedo reads?"

Perhaps a more PC-savvy member than I would be able to match that thread to a more searchable name. I'm feeling ready to dig into this job now: thanks everyone for the help!

Re: Trip meter won\'t reset?

I'll answer my own question... I used a small automotive apolstery pry tool... Worked like a champ....

A while back I was looking into swapping a late model speedo into an early cluster. Problem was the faceplate was different. I'm wondering if that is the only difference... Are the early and late model speedo guts interchangeable? Looks like they might be.....

Any ideas as how to zero or change the mileage on the speedo? If the late model guts will fit I would like to make the odometer reflect the same mileage reading.....

Speedo adustment post!

here you go Dowry. All you have to do is hit the URL button oin the instant UBB code menu and cut and
paste the URL when prompted for it, it will also allow you to replace the visible code making it a clickale
word as I have it.

Great tip, I wonder how I missed that one?
Hope my SJ410 has that lever.

Keep in mind guys and gals, that adjustment won't (i'm positive) change odometer readings, just the
speedo. Can someone that has done it, validate my statement?

You right Outlaw, it will not change the odometer. All I was after was trying to correct the speedometer to stay out of trouble with the local fuzz.
