Ill try to help, but i know nothing about xj manuals (i have an auto).

So, I am operating under the assumption that the shift rail(s) are located internally, yes? If this is the case, then unless you actually got inside the tranny, i beleive its physically impossible for the shift forks to move off the synchro ring.

I would go back and look at the shift lever to tranny assembly, it sounds to me like something isnt lined up quite right. Again, not knowing XJ manuals and if any linkage is involved, i would check any applicable linkage as well.

hopefully someone can give you more specific advice.

If you have a Peugeot tranny like mine, just take off the console and the shifter and take a look. It's not so difficult to line up the forks to neutral. You have to take out the shifter, don't try to drive it like this. You might put it into 2 gears and break the gearbox beyond repair.
