transmission problem need help!!!!1

alrite my frend has an 86 ranger 4 cylinder and the trans will go into gear and itll mae this loud noise like a grinding and ratteling and u can put it in gear and let the clutch out andit wont stall?? i thougth it was the throw out bearing but i have no idea now when u let out the clutch n gear it wont go newhere any advice help tips nething itll be greatly appericated. thanx Dave
