Transmission Noise

Seems like something is up with my T-176. I'm not sure if this is abnormal or not. It makes a "whirring" type noise when it is engaged. However, it is only noticable when I "amplify" it. I can amplify it by putting cupping my hand on the gear shift (kind of like a megaphone). Is this normal or is there something going on in the tranny. It stops making the noise when the clutch is in. THe fluids are all topped of as well. Does this sound like a bearing of some type? Thanks

If it makes noise with the trans in neutral, foot off the clutch, it probably needs an input shaft bearing. If it makes noise in gear, clutch disengaged, the pilot bearing is suspect. If it makes noise in all gears but 4th, the cluster gears or bearings are bad. The t176 is easy to rebuild and parts are relatively cheap. Hope this helps, good luck!
