Transmission in BII trashed

Well, now I know where the rep came from. The auto just died in my '88 BII I just bought

There was no warning or noise of any kind, it suddenly would not go, slipped like crazy. The pan was upon inspection full of metal shavings and other debris. This after I just got it back from having all the leaks fixed...

Yeah, that happens. happened to my buddy's 86. It just started losnig the ability to go up hills while driving down the road.

I dunno much about the BII's, but would it be possible to swap in a transmission out of a newer ranger?
Well they swapped the tranny with one from a salvage yard. It seems the old one wasn't working right to begin with. The one in it now shifts up into 4th and then will shift into overdrive from there. The old one would only go to 4th, no overdrive....
Well, glad to hear you got it all squared away!
I just hopes this one lives

Now that I have overdrive, I should get better gas mileage....

The C5 never was a good dependable transmission. What you outta do is convert it to a 5.0 and bolt on a C4 auto. They sell the conversion parts needed at www.jamesduff.com.
I don't have the C5, I have an A4LD. The problems just keep coming with this thing, I just had to replace the #5 injector.
For a daily driver it sure does spend more time in the shop than driving.....

I've got an 89 BII 4x4. It had the infamous A4LD, I just got done switching it to the Mitsubishi FM146 (5 spd) Even though I haven't drove it on the road much yet I'm extremely happy I switched. I rebuilt that stupid auto like 3 times, it kept giving me fits. Since yours is the 88, I don't know if you would need the FM 146 or the FM 145. I do know the FM 145 fits the 86-87's. If you need more info drop me a line, I've found a great website for Ranger and Bronco II info. Hope this helps.

Well I personally drove an 88' Eddie Bauer Edition(haha) and I spent probably twice as much keeping it running as I did buying it. I had the trans rebuilt once but had to get it worked on 4 or 5 times. I only ever got it stuck once but I must say, what a piece of $HIT.. its been parked in the driveway for a 1.5 yrs so the battery is toast and the gas is probably seperated..

Anyone know how much I could get for parting it out?

Unfortunately, the FM145/6 are to the 5 speeds what the A4ld is to the auto's in these trucks. Neither really holds up for the long haul.

For 5 speeds, the best you can hope for is the Toyo Kyogo, which a lot of people confuse for the Mazda tranny. The Mazda and Mitsubuishi trannys just won't hold of for any serious duty offroading.

The C5, by far, takes the prize in the auto tranny division for STOCK offerings. This tranny has taken severe abuse in my Explorer and never winced.

If that a4ld decides to give up again on you, you might consider checking into swapping a c5 in there.
