Buying my first jeep, 1992 Wrangler. It's in great condition, but the transfer case squeeks when I put it in FWD. Any idea what the problem would be? Replace entire T/C? Where to find rebuilt T/C... Ect. Any replies would be great, thanks,

I think to find what squeaks is best plan.

maybe the linkage needs to be adjusted or lubricated... maybe a u-joint ...maybe the vacuum front axle disconnect ???

Does the squeak seem to be the lever... as the lever moves or does it sound from the case itself??

the case is NP231 -
used cases can be found in salvage yards and from people on this bbs and most anywhere.
remanufactured cases are available via Quadratec, 4wd Hdw and rebuilders.
E-bay can be a good source for both if you don't want to take time and search the old school way

Probably you don't need a new case...
welcome to the bbs. please enjoy your stay.

Note - I hope you meant Etcetera which is Etc and not that you are looking for ECT which is the administration of a strong electric current that passes through the brain to induce convulsions and coma (so called - shock treatment)

No thanks. Anyway, the squeek is coming from the actual case when it goes in FWD. U-joint is good, not sure about vacuum. I am not mechanically inclined unfortunately, so I have to go on what others tell me. But I will look into the other options, lube job/ajustment yada yada. I checked around in junkyards in my area (Maine) and the closest one I could find was in New York :0 So if I do have to but a replacement, I'll probably look around here first.

Thanks for the info, and the greeting... and the ETC.

That's a bit pricey for an NP231. 4 Wheel Drive Hardware sells a stock reman case for 760 + 300 core charge. (one with a SYE kit is 1100 + 300 core) One question though, does the squeak happen when you shift into 4hi and 4lo, or just 4hi. Does it just happen when you move the shifter.., or does it squeak when you are driving. If you do drain the lube out of it...., the drain plug uses a 30mm socket. I had to measure it and then run to Sears.., thought maybe I could save you a trip.

For the price you stated you could buy an Atlass II x-case. I sold my old NP-231 for $100 +shipping which is a bit on the low side. I paid $125 for an NP-208 to replace it (which will work for you too, but you'll need new driveshafts). You could also install an NP-242 (I paid $200 for one) and get a full-time 4x4 high option along with the normal selections (again, you'd probably need new driveshafts).

But, if it's squeaking and still working, you don't need to replace it yet.

Welcome to the Jeep world. As for the tcase issue, I can't help you. Although, I can tell you the three things Jeep stands for:
J- just
E- everybody
E- Else's
P- parts

This leads to the other two.

J- just
E- expect
E- every
P- problem

That in turn leads to

J- just
E- empty
E- every
P- pocket

There is a strange brew of people out here I included that don't care about the above. The Jeep is never quite the way I like so we add other parts. I spend half my paychecks at MileHi Jeep Rebuilders in Denver. I think I should get direct deposit there.

Where in Maine are you located? I can come over and have a gander at it if you're close enough, but I'm not going to travel to The County. Boots lives up there though.

One of the BEST shops in the state is K&B Automotive, some decent wheelers there (Charly's YJ is sitting on 14B/D60/TBI350/NV4500/D300) and Brett & Bob are the nicest people you'll ever meet, I'm seeing them tomorrow, going to drop off some spare tire chains to them. They're in Ellsworth, on the road to Surry.

I have no idea on the T-case, could be something rubbing, could be a slack chain, could be a loose mount. We could narrow it down I'll bet though.

There is also a local website for us Northern wheelers, at www.northeastonlinewheelers.org, great group of people and a lot of knowledge there.

Benden. The 242 could very well be what's used in the Durangos. It has the following shift-pattern:

2WD
4WD P/T
4WD F/T
N
4WD Lo P/T

It's easy to find the little round metal tag on the back of the x-case and look for the model number. I believe it's the number at the top of the tag.

First thing to do is to check out the mounts. If it is not that, check the front driveshaft. If you just got the Jeep then a great first project would be to pull off the drive shafts and replace the Ujoints. That my solve your problem. And even if it doesn't it is a great first project. You will have piece of mind with the new joints. Plus if you ever do break on on the trail you will know how to fix it.
Then change the fluid in the T case, transmission, and front diff. (rear too probably since you would be doing it)
Check to see that the shift linkage is all tight, and that it is not moving around.
Then if it isn't that, then it does sound like it could be slack in the chain. How many miles on this Jeep?
Finally, if it comes to it, you should be able to get a new Xfercase for 3-4 hundred, right to your door. Keep us posted about this problem. I am interested in learning what it is when you find out.
