Tranny to T-Case reinstall

In the interest of time, I have decided to keep the Th-400 in my Jeepster. Originally I was going to change over to a manual, but the lease on my house runs out in August, so I need to get this thing on the road.

I remember some posts a while back where RRich stated that disconnecting the T Case from the Tranny was a no no. This was a week or so after I had done just that. I didn't worry too much about it, as I wasn't planning on using the tranny again. Now I need to think about it.

So, what do I need to do to get them back together without screwing anything up? I seem to recall the original debate was about needle bearings falling out. I haven't seen anything like that happen, but I don't want to just hope things are fine and rely on blind luck.

Advice?

Thanks,

Paul

John,

I think you are right, I looked back over that post, and I was never specific on the transmission I had. Just wanted to make sure that I was messing anything up. I try to sit up and take notice when RRich says, don't do "this" and I have allready done "this"

Can I get a new gasket for between the tranny and T-case or do I use some make your own gasket stuff? Any tricks for putting these things together? Is it easiest to mount the engine on the frame, attach the tranny and then the T-case or should I mate the Tranny and T-Case first? Any gasket between the tranny and engine?

Once again, thanks for the help. I'm actually thinking this thing might run sometime.

I think they are serious. Just do like they said and make you one. Put a little RTV black sealer and you should be good to go. Or you can go down to your local part store and let them try to get you one, Might take a month or maybe never, you decide what you would rather do!

Never seen an engine to tranny gasket, and those are serious alternatives above (beer carton and phone book cover) to trying to find the exact gasket. If you talk to 10 mechanics, you'll find all 10 of them have used some alternative paperboard type material to make a gasket at one time or another. Just cut it close and then use a ball peen hammer along the edges and holes, its very easy to do. If you do the holes first, you can insert a bolt in the hole through the gasket and into the part, once you get two or three you wont have to hold the gasket material, it should just stay there.
FYI, you can go to the parts store and buy bulk gasket material.

Errr... the parts store also sells gasket paper, it is real cheap and easy to work with, it might seal better than beer cartons and such. Use the permatex paint on gasket dressing and you will have no problems with it leaking. If it even needs a gasket, I am not shure, but might as well right? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I would mount the tranny on the motor first, and then lift up the t-case, it makes it easy and not as heavy. I prefer bolting everything together on the ground, motor and all, then using an engine hoist to move it all in together, but that is just me. If you have the motor out, do that for shure. It is really easy if the body is off too..... /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

hmm..I never thought of using beer cartons or phonebook covers, very cool. I used a 'Lucky Charms" box to make the gasket for bottom plate on my T/C shifter. That may entail a new name for the Jeepster..."Magically Delicious".

I took my tranny (400) and tcase out last year together (what a booger!). Later took out Tcase alone to switch to Tera Low gears. Much easier! I'd put 'em in one at a time. Have your gaskets made up already and dry fit to line up the holes. I bought new gaskets at Mile High Jeep Rebuilders (Denver) , but you can make them just as easy as recommended above (Plan "A"), or with sheet gasket material from the parts store (Plan "B", but no beer included, but no busted knuckles from drinking all the beer then installing the trans or Tcase). If you go with plan "B", buy enough beer for helpers so not just you ends up with busted knuckles...plus then you have future gasket material.
