Tranny temp gauge

Just curious, I was thinking of installing an automatic transmission temp gauge on my 99TJ. It would be nice to monitor the temp while towing a small trailer, however, there does not appear to be any real convent way to install one. The best way would be to drop the tranny pan and install the sensor internally, or in a fitting welded to the pan. I was hoping to splice into the tranny cooler line with a “T” and monitor it this way, but no one seems to sell this set-up. Any ideas from anyone who has done this? Thanks..

I was thinking the same thing about the automatic in our '97 ZJ, and the conclusion that I reached was that my best shot was a tee on the tranny end of the pressure line going up front to the radiator. The fitttings are sort of wierd, but it is still doable. I got rid of the ash tray and a two-gauge panel fits right in.

Re: Tranny temp-In the pan?

Woof! So many things to consider. By reading the post by LEVE, and "boiling" it all down, my take on this subject is thus: (1) Probably the best reason TO monitor the fluid temp is to anticipate the effects on shifting, lockup, and general performance such that they do not take you by surprise. (2) to be more "advised"; which for a person like me who does not have any sense of smell; is a darn good hedge against trouble sneaking up...especially when abuse is taking place...like with a trailer, heat, and a steep grade. Beyond that, it is just being a hot rodder, plain and simple...I ADMIT IT...but hey, we do wierd stuff like buy Jeeps don't we.
As far as where to take the temp/install the sensor; no doubt the pan would be best; but bolt-ins are a little safer for Joe Average in his garage than is welding a bonney flange in the pan; so a nice plenum/tee setup would be good as Larry pointed out. The temp of the fluid in the pan IS the temp that goes to the cooler since the pump picks up the oil from the pan and feeds the cooler. The only difference is the heat generated by the fluid dynamics of the pump itself.
I have room for a duoble-gauge panel in my ZJ, and I was thinking of a setup where I could read the fluid temp both TO and FROM the cooler. How's THat for being an incurable hot-rodder. SHEESH!

Thanks, Larry. Very informative post!
