The peugot and t-case in my 89 yj is destroyed. Found an add stating "a rebuilt t-5 and dana 300 from an 84 cj." What kind of obstacles am I gonna run into if I try this swap? Thanks in advance.

Maybe I'm dreaming, but isn't there something different about the position of the front driveshaft between a CJ and YJ? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

yes yj used left output to the front, cj uses right. so unless you want to change your front axle this wont work.

build 'em don't buy 'em
why is there no mazda thread?
I feel left out.:p

Rats, I did not know that. Thanks for the info.

Now, maybe I'm dreaming but... I seem to remember seeing something where a 300 was reindexed to
put the front shaft on the left side to install in a YJ. I remember thinking at the time that this would put
the cover on the bottom side.and would be a problem with the shift rails.

Sorry to be a little weird in my first reply, but Friday night, long week, trying to relax a bit. Anyway, you have a good idea, and there are plenty of CJ Dana 30s around from swaps to 44s and such. Dno't drop this idea yet, it may cost more tha you want to spend, but all in all it's a darn good idea. Locking hubs as a bonus in the deal.

Only another problem just occurred to me, YJ is wider.

cjjeepercreeper,

i appreciate the encouragement. i'm a novice wheeler and new to wrenchin'. got the 89yj a few years ago, got the 4.56/33's last year, the reman. 258 with goodies 2 months ago, and went bananas muddin' 2 weeks ago. that's when i fried the tranny and t-case and now i'm jeepless and depressed. saw the ad in the paper and got excited... well, need to do more research.

I put a Chevy tranny/transfer in my Scrambler and they are set up the same as the CJ's, but opposite the Fords. It seems to me a Ford setup would work as the output to the front is on the left and not the right. An NP435 (6.69:1 first and smooth shifting but no overdrive) and the attached transfer would work, but you'd need to have the driveshafts redone, hell, you'll need new ones, but you could retain your axles. The only part you'd need would be an AA bellhousing to mate the two (tranny and engine). I bought my setup complete for $250 and the shafts ('87 Grand Wagoneer, long splines and heavy shafts - $25 for both) were $100 for new U-joints, cutting, welding, and balancing (ready to install), which isn't too bad when you consider the price of the new ones. I'd look into it more, it's a nice setup and cheaper than rebuilding the tranny you have.
