tranny swap & gear ratios

Alright, I may have traked down most of the parts I'll need to swap a T-5 into my 83 CJ7 with a T-999. I know, it's not the strongest tranny, but my Jeep is a daily driver which sees only moderate off-road use and no rock crawling. I want a manual transmission and an overdrive. Has anyone done this swap? I ask because someone told me that I would need to change the front and rear ends because those which came stock with the auto tranny were geared "too high?" so that when I shift the T-5 into 5th gear the engine will bogg down. I really don't want to get into finding and changing gears. Do I need to worry about this, or will the swap work with the gears I have? Still curious.

Jeepgator, what size tires do you use (or want to use)? and whats your stock gear ratios?

i swapped a T-5 into my wifes CJ-8 (had a "gone bad" SR-4) her jeep still has 2.73 gears and 32" tires, now we can go 65 MPH and are still in forth gear! (if it wasn't for the kind of low 1st gear we'd be s*cking)
anyway i'm plannig on going with 3.73 gears this summer. (and never going above a 33" tire)
my thinking is with an overdrive manual tranny and 32-33" tires somewere around 4.10 would be a good gear ratio. (unless you have a low power 4-cylinder/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

An AX-15 has to be stronger than a T-5, don't you think? I could be wrong, but I've heard the T-5 wouldn't be that great even for "your" purposes. Hate to see ya go to the trouble to put it in, then 6 months a year down the road have to pull 'er out again!

3/4tonYJ,

I am running 31"x10.5" tires. I don't know what gears i have. I'd love to have another gear to shift into at 65mph, I do a lot of highway driving. Do you think this will work?
