I'm currently looking at three different 80's trucks and all of them come with the 350 or 400 turbo transmissions and 350 engines. I'm a little worried about extremely poor gas mileage and would like to know just what i would expect to get with these three speed tranny's? Also is it possible to swap in a 700r4, I know the 700 isn't as strong but if it is possible get a 87 or newer after they fixed the problems?

Yah, a 700 should pretty much bolt right up. I'd get the newest one I could find, to make sure all of the bugs were worked out.

Changing the tranny will probably affect the transfer case and the driveshaft lengths as well.

Yah, didn't think of tcase and driveshafts, just find a newer truck with the same bed/cab config, pull the tranny/tcase/dshafts, rebuild tranny/tcase, and install!

And if you mean "looking" as in looking ot buy, get a 3/4 ton or 1 ton and you'll be happy you did. Stronger everything that you won't be tempted to upgrade really soon....
