Tranny for a CJ7 85

The tranny in my CJ just crashed - I believe it is a 999 and the TC is a dana 300. I'm interested in the possibility of putting in a different tranny. The jeep is used as a driver and also used on moderate off-road -MOAB, Black Hills, Sawtooth. The automatic has worked pretty well even through the 31" tires have put alot of stress on it. I'm comfortable taking on a rebuild if that seems like the best direction to go, but really interested in the BEST Options that might be available at a reasonable cost. Thanks,

I guess you've allready read this.

Actually you already have a pretty darn good trans. I would go with a rebuild, auto trannies are not the big mystery some people
think they are. I would stay with the trans you have, possibly with a different valve body to make it more efficient.

Get involved or lose it all, the choice is yours!
A good rebuild shop can rebuild your tranny and beef it up.

If partsmike advice is of interest to you, you might want to look at his post on 3-8, @22:30, 'What did the TF 904 come in?' Apparently, your trans has a pretty good reputation, and Mike's suggestion/post is to consider the non-lockup valve body and converter from the 904, combined with your 999 trans. Your 999 apparently has a preferred, slightly lower, first gear. Unless you have a need for something really 'beefy', I'd suggest keeping what you have. Off-road, or on, it certainly out-performs the factory manual trans' (obviously, my opinion, but based on many years of experience).
Best wishes.

Thanks for the advice. I will rebuild the 999. I must admit my skepticism about turning it over to a tranny shop without being able to tell them exactly what I want them to do. It may be a growing mistrust of someone else touching the old CJ. I understand from the posts that it would be beefed up and more efficient by going with a different throttle body and by using a nonlockup torque converter.

I understood that the lockup torque converter was helpful on the highway to reduce slippage. Is the disadvantage of a nonlockup that it is less fuel efficient at highway speeds?

Any other changes that I should consider in rebuilding the 999?
