Tranny and T-case breathers

282 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Dana
Got extended breather lines on my axles, but on the tranny (T-150) and T-case (Dana 20) they're right on the case. Anybody know what type/size fittings they are (not the same)? Pipe thread maybe, or something else? I figure I oughta extend them too, to keep water out, but I don't want to hassle with removing the old breathers until I have the new tube and fittings in hand.

On a related note, should there be a rubber boot on the tranny shift lever? I don't mean the one on the floorboards, but another one to seal the tranny itself, like on my Fiat? Or is there an internal seal, under the metal cover where the shift lever pokes out?

I don't know the answer to the second question, but in regard to the breather lines for the T150 and Dana 20, take a pair of vice grips and grab that little breather on the Dana20, turn it out (it's a standard RH thread), and inside, you'll find 3/8" pipe thread. I took my 3/8" pipe thread die and just cleaned the threads up a bit, and then threaded a 3" long piece of 3/8" pipe in there to attach my vent line to. I just ran the t-case vent over to the frame where it attaches to a T fitting...one end goes to the rear axle, one end goes towards the front to another t-fitting (one to the front axle, one from the back, and one up to a little plastic inline fuel filter high above the waterline...)

p.s. How are the poor man's lockers working?

Trying to come up with a witty line to end all of my posts...
Are you sure it's 3/8" pipe thread and not 1/8" pipe thread? At the hardware store you can buy compression fittings to hook up your vent hoses. Mine are all on quick connects, but now that I think about it, they really don't need to be. I have also heard using a rubber baby's nipple will help keep the water out but let the tranny/other breathe. Why take the easy road out though...

The whole setup for mine cost about $10, in case anyone is wondering, and it includes the hose.

Good, though I haven't really been anywhere that'd give 'em a real test. This weekend hopefully. Had some electrical problems that were a bitch to track down (a short caused by pinching a wire when I jacked up the engine to pull a motor mount). Awkward, though..... I'm trying to figure out a cheap way to apply the brake without pushing on the pedal. A secondary master cylinder driven by an air cylinder seems to make the most sense, but I don't have an onboard air compressor yet. Mico makes some real neat remote actuators, but at their prices I might as well go with an ARB.....
