I'll be renting a trailer in about 2 weeks and when I bought my truck the electrical conectors at the hitch had ben clipped off. Should I go out and put one on now or wait and see what kinda connector is on the uhaul? Basically, are there different connectors out there?

the most basic and common connectors are the 6 pole and the 4 pole connectors. the 4 poles are what the manufacturers are installing in their factory tow packages.

there are adapters(6 to 4, and vice versa) that cost about $7-$10 just in case the trailer and truck harnesses don't match. the harness for our trucks cost about $15 and you can pick one up from Wal-Mart. i also recommend getting a 'short stop' that fits in between the truck harness and the trailer harness....that way if there's a short in the trailer wiring, it won't short out the trucks wiring.

my dad rents u-haul equipment and i assume that the trailers are standard region to region. usually on a u-haul trailer there are 4 single wires. two are black and two are white. each pair is for the lights on one side of the trailer. on the end of each wire there is a male push connector. if you plan on doing any amount of towing your best bet is to invest in the 7 terminal female connector. what you are looking for is one round contact in the center with six flat contacts arranged around it in a hexagon. these connectors are around $7-$10. u-haul sells an adapter that converts this to plug in their trailer wires. it also converts this set-up to a flat 4 connector increasing its versatility should you purchase a trailer down the road.

I got a towing package on my Ram that came with a big round 7 pin plug on the bumper and a 4 pin adapter came with it. Then, I added an adapters for the small round (6 pin?) plug and I'm set for anything.

Just a thought man, but if you are going to be doing any of the wiring yourself, route it up and over the hitch. My dad used the Blazer for two things, driving to his hunting spots down 2 tracks, and for pulling the family travel trailer during the summer. So he wasn't to concerned with things getting ripped off or bashed. I have a bunch of wires hanging down under the Class III hitch. Unfortunately, I noticed them after I had dragged the thing through some goo while crossing a stream. The wires were all a little damaged. I haven't trailered anything with it, so I am just going to redo all the wires. Route them so they go up and over, and stay out of the way.

ZIP TIES.
I don;t trailer much in the winter..just in the summer, so i zip tie my wiring harness to the hith frame in the winter and use a rubberbad in the summer. keeps my wires off the trail and out of the mud...well sometime. tough to keep the wires out of 3' of mud. othjerwise rig your truck to have the female end mounted solid and plug the trailer into your truck. thats the next project for me after i mess with the torsion bars....and the wheel spacers...and the rear diff...and the tranny...and the manual engage frnt..and and and...man this list gets long. perhaps next year I"ll have it done

Oops, my bad. I forgot to mention that the female end is hard mounted in a unit thing that hangs down from the bumper on the driver's side of the hitch. Instead of routing the wiring over the bar and down to the back of it, they wired it all so it goes down below the bar and then up to the female plug unit thingy. u4ia4 is right though, if you are just going to have a loose conector thingy, just zip tie it up when you aren't using it.
