Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

I was surfing Trail Tough and noticed that they have a "Knuckle Over" steering system that puts the Draglink above the axle not unlike the Breeze system.

Anyone have comments on it?

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

Hi -

Just a quick clarification - seems there has been a minor amount of confusion in regards to the two types of steering that we offer and how they fit. The Andys Samurai Steering is one type which we call "Hy-Steer". It puts the tie rod above the spring as well as the drag link. But it is not for use with lifted perches or rotated pinions. The other type is what we call "Knuckle Over Steering" which we manufacture. It puts the drag link only above the spring and can be used with most any kind of perch or spring combination without clearance issues. It comes complete with both drag link and tie rod.

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

After ordering RROs hi steer kit I found it to be made of leverite , leave her right in the box it came in. You need to pull the knuckle, re drill and tap the king pin holes then put the whole thing back together again. Waaaaaaay to much work, plus IMHO you are weakening the knuckle. TT or Breeze is the only way to go.

Man, you must be lazy!

Took me a whopping 45 minutes to disassemble, drill, tap, locktite, reassemble the knuckle for the RRO kit. And that was installing all new seals while I was at it. Plus it now has grade 9 bolts holding on the steering arm instead of those 4 weak a$$ bolts that hold the kingpin in place. For the trade off I think the work was easy!!

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

The guy I sold the kit to thought the same as you untill last weekend when he cracked the knuckle. Big Tires + weakened knuckle = major problems. The one thing most everyone does not take into consideration is the fact that the factory parts are built to their max. specs. Any alteration to said parts weakens them beyond their limitations to function as designed, ergo breakage. Others may enjoy living with a wrench in their hand, I perfer wheeling.

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

Man, I hate to hear that the knuckle broke. But just so you know, the steering arm has been redesigned to incorporate the caliper bolts as mounting points. I think you need to give Glenn a call or send an e-mail explaining in detail what happened. If stuff is breaking it needs to be addressed!!! I would love to see a pic of the breakage though to see where it actually broke. I think a lot of people would like to see it.

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

No pics of the damage, but the knuckle cracked at the corner where the king pin bolt goes through. It's a possibility that the new hole was not drilled exactly stright. Drilling done by hand, no access to a press.
What galls me is that the kit was ordered on 11/1/02, delivered on 11/29/02 and was obsolite by 12/01/02. It was installed on 12/6/02 and failed on 12/7/02. At least you would think that RRO would have the courtousy to inform their coustomers that they have discovered a design flaw and would upgrade if you so desire. Especially that soon after delivery. Most of us don't go out and install the mods the same day we get them.

In reply to:

I thought he was taking care of customers who have the older style??

He does if you find out about it and call him on it. Otherwise he won't come looking for you to tell you about it. You would think when it comes to a saftey issue, and to me steering is a safty issue, he would let people with the old design know rather than to let us find out it about through these boards or the hard way.

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

Man I think you are really missing out on a few things here. First, if in fact what you say is true, why hasn't your friend called RRO? 1 888 801 7271 You see, the kit comes with a lifetime warranty. This info is in the kit and on the website. Second, when Chevy makes a change to the 2004 model, do you think they are going to call everyone to tell them about it. NO!!! Third, it wasn't changed due to a steering saftey issue. They just made it better. A lot of guys bash Glenn and RRO on here. I know that I personally have experienced a few very minor mishaps with the shipping department. But you don't see me bashing the RRO or Glenn. $h1t happens! Grow up, be a man, get some pics, post them on here and give Glenn a call or just email the guy. I'm sure that if everything you say is true he will make it right. How do you think he stays in business???????????

I too 2nd NC_Zuk. I work for a "small" computer company based out of the Mid Hudson Valley in NY. I deal
with quality and engineering changes to our products in 1/3 of the US. If it doesn't break under a
maintenance contract we don't go looking for it. It's unfair to bad mouth a vendor and his product until you've
given hin the opportunity to correct it. Contact him. Give him a chance to fix it or tell you to stuff it. Then
post here and let us know. I've had excellent service from him in the past

Re: Trail Tough\'s Knuckle Over steering?

Well, you can say you heard it here first. I just got word that the testing phase is complete, which means the Breeze High Steer will be going into production in the next couple of weeks. It is based on the proven mounting design of the Breeze Cross Over steering, and the same high quality fully machined billet arms (not just a flat chunk of steel) with the King Pins welded in. This will be a complete kit with solid billet rod drag link and tie rod as well as all hardware AND tie rod ends (nothing else to buy). It also works on either a low perch, OR a high perch with up to a 5 leaf spring pack. The design also addresses as much of the original steering geometry as possible in a high steer system. Something the other systems overlook. The Breeze CO Steer will remain available for those who do not need a High Steer system. If interested in getting on the list for the initial run, call me (USA 1-866-4x4part) or Sue (Canada 1-604-540-7778).
