Track advice for aggressive trail

I'm looking for some advice on a track setup for a 1997 Storm.

I installed an Agressor 1" track (Kimpex) on my Indy 650 a few years ago and found it amazing. Traction is incredible and even deep snow is pretty good.

The Storm right now has the stock Polaris track on it (about 0.5" lug - in good condition), but the traction is terrible. Hit the throttle and it spins like mad at any speed (with less than half the acceleration of the 650). Deep snow - forget it; I'm stuck before I know what hit me.

I'm thinking of going for the Camoplast 1.25" continuous lug track without studs (I haven't tried studs yet on any of my sleds - we don't usually get much ice on the trails around here). I've been told the Camoplast track is stronger than the Kimpex. Anyone blown a Kimpex Aggressor 1.25"?

I could also install 144 studs in the stock track, but I don't know if that will help at all for deeper snow.

What do you run and recommend for hard packed trail and some deep snow on relatively flat terrain?

The trail conditions around here typically is hard packed snow. How would a 0.5" track with 144 studs compare to a 1.25 Challenger track without studs for these conditions.

When I bought my 90 650 two years ago I put a brand new Kimpex track on it. I have not had a problem with it, or it's construction. The cords on the very edge have frayed out a bit, but you just cut 'em off and burn 'em like a shoelace. The track you refer to on your Storm is not a 1/2 inch, but rather a 3/4 inch lug (I know it doesn't look that way). I have the same lug height on my 650 and my Ultra (680).

In good frozen hard pack, both sleds hook fine, however, two weeks ago I was riding the Ultra on a warm day (40+) and the trails had 3-4 inches of meal on them, per my dad my machine spun all day long. I even had instances when I would over rev the motor.

My point, if you ride on frozen conditions your better off with the shorter track and picks for traction. If you ride in deep fluff, or deep meal/slush the long lug without picks is probably your hot setup. I'm thinking of an 1.25 for my Ultra for next year.

My Kimpex Aggressor is also showing minor fraying at the edges after almost 3000 hard miles. Which track are you running? The aggressor 1"?

I measured the lug height and it's not 3/4". The Storm is the SE model and according to one of my books the SE came with a 0.61" (or something around there) track. The regular Storm apparently came with the 3/4".

I think I'll probably go for the 1.1875" Challenger. If I can't find a deal now I'll wait until closer to next season. Another option is to swap tracks with the 650, but with 3000 miles on the Aggressor if I blow it up with the Storm I'll need a new track for it and be stuck with the crap track on the 650.

1997 Storm SE,XCR600 SE, SPX SE all had the 0.725 tracks while the regular Storm,XCR,SPX had the Lightning 0.82 track.

I have put over 10,000 miles on Kimpex agressor tracks with no problems,I would not hessitate on getting another Kimpex.Friends also have Kimpex tracks on MXZs,FIIIs and Machs with no problems.

Hey Steve don't forget to look at the Polaris 1.25 track. That is the track that I run (had 3 now) and have good luck with them. It also seems to be the track of choice for allot of the performance guys running non "P" sleds in this area. They can be had for under 500 loonies if a person shops around.

Man am I having no luck with sleds...

The "new" Storm with the rebuilt and warrantied engine had the water pump bearing go at 62 miles (since I bought it). I installed a used water pump ($180 Cdn) and took the machine for a test ride yesterday. We got a couple of inches (almost) of snow yesterday so the trails were decent for this time of year. After about an hour of running I stopped at a gas station and filled up with premium (for the first time - running 50:1 premium/mix before) and then made it 4 miles...

Cruising at about 30 mph I punched it wide open. A couple of seconds later at around 50 mph I felt a severe vibration, and heard a severe hammering noise followed by screeching and then a whole bunch of severe rattling and clanking (after I hit the kill switch and locked up the track). It didn't seize, but when I turn the crank the PTO piston doesn't follow properly (seems to be about 0.5" of slop in the connecting rod bearing).

It had 120 miles on it since a complete rebuild (including crank) and the shop says they will fix it under warranty. I wonder what sort of damage to expect when they tear it down... It was turning about 8400 rpm with wide open throttle when it went and it was loud.

Any ideas on what could cause this to happen twice? The big end on the PTO rod was the reason the engine was rebuilt in the first place. Plug color looks good and did last time too. Last time the pistons and cylinders survived without damage, but it was a low rpm seize.

The tracks I spoke of were Kimpex Agressor (on the 650), and a camoplast on the Ultra. The Kimpex was definetly a 3/4 track because I ordered it. Haven't had any durability issues with it at all.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, lucky you had a shop do the work and got the warranty!
