Torque Arm

I Was under the Jeep today and I noticed the torque arm bushing. What is this supposed to do? If I am calling it the wrong thing it is the little circular rubber bushing on the driver's side of the transmission. It seems to me that it is on wrong, but I don't know. This is what the thing looks like from top to bottom on a funky two ended stud that sticks through the skid-plate:
1. Nut
2. Top bushing
3. Length of steel coming from the transmission.
4. Bottom Bushing
5. Skidplate
This just seems like it doesn't do anything. If the transmission twists to the passenger side on acceleration, There is no need for this. However, it looks like that on heavey engine-braking fit would shift back to the drivers' side and bump on the bushing, That then leaves the top bushing useless.

I'm sorry this post is so long and makes little, if any, sense. I just bought the Jeep and am trying to learn about it.
By the way, it is a 1983 CJ-7 with T4 and 258. Thanks

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif My little moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gifwho works on those torque arms is already crocked and pretty much useless Ed, but what he usually does is install the stud in the skid plate, then the rubber biscuit under the arm and another over the arm, and then washer and nut. His theory is that as the engine rotates it tries to pick up the left side of the Jeep. The torque arm helps it do that, and relieves the motor mounts of that annoying twisting action that so often has the fan chewing up the shroud. My moonguy is fabbing up a sturdier arm for our TH400 because the one that was on there had broken our tranny to t-case adapter because it did not fit up all that good. We have Quadra-Trac drive and as you know, there is a ton of offset, which makes the whole torque thing a little different than a centered rear-output t-case would./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

CJDave is right. there should be a washer and nut under the skidplate on the stud. This keeps the tranny from twisting under the torque. A LOT of times this stud is either broken where it connects to the skidplate or the nut below the skidplate is all chewed up, loose, stripped and worthless. That happened to mine. I just got another from four wheel drive hardware for under $5. If you are getting alot of shaking during startup that feels a little like axle wrap or you are geting a clanging or clunking (the stud banging off the skidplate as tranny is torqued) then this might be your culprit. good luck.

So that is what that arm is supposed to do. I just checked mine and it is really loose. Is it supposed to be tight so that the bushings are lightly compressed? My stud is chewed up and I am not sure if I will be able to tighten it. What is the part number from 4WD Hardware?

Thanks,
Tom

the stud part number is #5358879
the poly bushings are #U60298 for red or #U60298BL for black and you need 2
now you need some large washers and nuts and you are good to go. hope that helps. it is what i used. my bushings are tightened so that they touch eachother snuggly. Hope it helps... oh yeah,

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif It's best if you can use an ESNA lock nut to set the tension. That way they STAY where you want them./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Thanks for your help, everyone. I have been getting a shaking on stat-up that I hope will be fixed with the new bolt and bushings.
