Just to let you all know there is a company trying to build a "Four-wheel drive park" near Llano Texas. They need people to show interest before they proceed. As you all know places in the state to wheel are few and far between, so this may be a chance for us to get something really good close to home. The web site has a little info. on whats going on. I have talked to oe of the guy's trying to get this together and they seem real interested in all questions I had to ask. The web address is http://beyondthepavement.com

Yeah, I saw an ad about this group in my FWD-FWD newsletter. Honestly, I was disappointed when I saw the website...Land Rovers, Hummers and Mercedes...not exactly the guys I like to wheel with. The price got my attention too...5000 for membership. Clayton, Okl., Ft. Hood, Muenster, Deleon, Decatur, Tx. Motorized Trails Coalition, etc... are ALOT less expensive.

I agree with the high price $500 per year. I am lucky to scrape that together to keep my jeep running (well) let alone for access to an off road park. I guess it is like a hunting lease, but i can only see it attracting high dollar rigs and did you see the celebrities part? I would be very interested if they instead charged an access fee per use and small member ship like Shiloh(Alto, TX i think). the member list showed one rig and it is my guess that it will stay that way unless they make it a little cheaper. i do expect to see a few more land rover discoveries and d90's as well as lexus and mercedes suv's. oh well, it justs makes me upset that of the few places in TX, the only place that is causing a stir and opening the doors to more land access by four wheelers is going to cost $500 per year or $1000 per year after april 1 just for basic membership. The terrain does look awesome. seems to have a lot of extreme and tricky runs. Maybe when i graduate and have a decent job my views will change. But also being in houston and having to pay all that membership fee stinks. d$rn :( IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT JOIN SO THAT WE AT LEAST WONT LOSE IT FOR GOOD, then if they ever bring down the price i will see you out there.

Personally, I'm not prejudice of who I wheel with, as long as they're willin' to wheel it! I don't believe in buildin' "wall hangers". Ft Hood is currently closed to OHV. Most of these places are more than a Sunday afternoon run for us in central Texas. This looks to be a great opportunity for close access.

What would you guys think of a place that had limited access on a pay per use basis three to four times a year with a maximum of 25 vehicles at anytime on a 1800 acre site. Primitive camping would be available and access fees would be $50/vehicle/day and $10/person/camping. This site is within 2 hours of Austin and San Antonio.

West.

Probably about 5 hrs from Houston.

Tom:
That's sounding alot more reasonable. Of course, being cheap, I would argue for $25 a day plus the camping fee, but it is something I would be interested in. I'm in N. Texas, but I tow my jeep to the hill country regularly. In fact, I was there this past weekend. Fredricksburg, Austin 4x4 groups and San Antonio Jeep Exclusive would all probably be interested.

My only thought is "that for 500.00 a year, that is 41.00 bucks a month. That for a place 35-40 min. from the house sounds good." Remember that places to wheel are NEVER going to get any easier to find for us here in Texas. I know of the canadian river up in north Texas, I know of the Llano river, I know Devil's Den in San-Antonio, I could drive to Big-Bend, but what else? In fact this may be a good time to compile a list of places to wheel in Texas.

There's the place being developed in Gilmer. Has anyone done this run? What level of difficulty are the trails? Any hard core rock crawlin'?

Gilmer is not technically open yet from what I understand. Its land being purchased by the Texas Motorized Trails Coalition (www.texasmotorizedtrails.com ...I don't know how to make it a click on thingy). I haven't made this run myself, so I'm not sure what the terrain is like. Supposed to be 1,800 acres. Folks have run it, with the current owners' permission. Now TMTC is in the process of buying it and has asked everyone to stay off until the deal is done, unless they have the current owners' permission. I just checked out TMTC's website and the place sounds promising.

Hey Shain, where is there to run at Muenster? You aren't talking Bulcher are you? I've been there with dirt bikes and quads, but understood that they weren't open to trucks...

LakeTex:
Generally its not open to 4x4s, just ATVs. BUT, Ft.Worth Dallas four wheel drive members have access to it 2-3 times per year. Ya gotta be a member of FWD-FWD to go and only on the sceduled times. E-mail me and I'll give you more info. Couple of other places near you, besides the obvious Clayton, are accessable through either FWD-FWD, Jeeps of North Texas or Decatur 4x4.
