There is a small group of guys from this board going to Harlan KY June 18th - 21st. So if your one of those guys that actually has trail redundancy and lockers instead of just bragging about it, you should come on out and show us how it's done. :D:D:D

But I warn you that you will have to "mind your manners" and we will be taking pictures......

You can p.m. me for details or just look for my fat butt in my Jeep when you get there....

Hope that you all have fun....

Guess that you should get Team Rush to join in.

Dale
That's a great idea... seems like he'd fit right in....

yup... it still has 1/2 of a Jeep hood and a Jeep front clip.

That's a little more than lockers and trail redundancy!

I've never been to Harlan, what's it like?
I guess I could take lots of recovery equipment and have you guys tow my junk back to the trailer!

Will depend if we get the V-8 in Kerry's Jeep or not,
I'm running on 31s with a 35 year old 304 under the hood, no cage and if that monster in the picture is any indication,
I'm WAY out gunned!

Would 35s and a 360 CID grind around down there, or are we wasting time getting there? :D
I know Kerry, and he'd try it, but I hate paying to get down there, get in just to break an axle on the first obstacle!
(He's a right foot driver, but FUN to ride with when you know it's not your vehicle he's trashing!)
Bah, that thing doesn't have lockers or trail redundancy...

Just search youtube for Harlan. From what I've seen you post in other threads, you'll be just fine.;) Come on out..... and be sure to bring your Jeep, bail money, and a cage.:D

Sorry... going to Golden Mountain that weekend for the 10th Annual Jeepster JAM
That's too bad Dave. It would have been nice to have you.:)

Looks like a long arm, first class ground pounder to me!

Before I bring 'MY JEEP', it needs POWER STEERING!
That little lunch box locker in the front REALLY works my butt off trying to keep up with no power steering!

I like the *IDEA* of no power steering for simplicity's sake,
But in function, it SUCKS! :(
What makes matters worse, I just got this steering box new...
There goes another $200 of my favorite dollars down the drain to 'Upgrades'...

I have a couple of J-20s and going to snag the steering box and brackets/pump/hoses off one of them for the little turd...

And I don't have a cage... Just the factory 'Sport Bar' on the one I'm driving now...
And I ain't going on the 'Big Boy' trails again without one!

Scared myself Memorial weekend... I am mortal, and after trail 27 I ain't going back without cage, full harnesses and an increased rider on my health insurance policy!

I got off the 'Bunny' trails and on to one that scared the crap out of me by mistake!
You couldn't have drove a greasy needle up my butt with a sledge hammer!
I still have vinyl dye stains in my crack I had such a grip on the seat!

All the crawlers were buzzing around looking at me like I was an Idiot (and I was!) and I was SURE it was going to take an airlift to get my little rust bucket out of there...
(I found a way out, but that was pretty spooky too!)

I got WAY too comfortable having a cage, straps, high back seats and nearly let it get the best of me!

When the fire extingusher came loose from the bracket and cracked me in the back of the head,
The first aid kit wound up in the drivers floor board,
and I was on two wheels (opposed, not on the same side!) I learned right then it was time to get the tubing bender out again!

Wheel base and long arms would have helped too!

Anyway, I'm out de-greasing a 360 for Kerry's Jeep,
And knocking the cob webs off my cheap tubing bender and looking for a place to bolt it down again!
I REALLY want to get back to the places we used to go without dying in the process!

That's the problem with selling one you are comfortable with, you have to start over again!

I don't know what a long arm ground pounder is...

You don't need a full cage, that sporty bar and a lap belt will be fine. Hell, they let 4 wheelers out there and they don't have a cage at all. I think they require a helmet for the class 5 stuff but I've only seen a few wear them. Just bring a brain bucket and you'll be good to go. Harlan's trails are named stuff like "Cream Puff" ... there ain't no "skulls and cross bones" with "wadded up flaming Jeeps". No need to get scared.

You wont need power steering either. Once you get off the pavement into the loose stuff it will turn just fine. (especially with those little tires);)

Sure hope you make it. Maybe you can give us a free clinic on safety or excuses or something.....:D

Well heck you should have just said so in the first place...:D:D:D

Labor day, Redbird, is that the same weekend that the "Fat Boy Jeepers" have an event? Maybe I'm thinking of something different.

Show this to that other guy, can't say his name... tell him you've been smoking cheese.

Can't comment on 'Fat Boys' weekends.
Don't know enough about them.

If they come up, they will be welcome.
We are a friendly bunch most of the time...

-------------------------------------------

Why would you smoke cheese when there is meat available?

Why would you take pictures of anything getting smoked?
Isn't that like watching paint dry?

I grew up with a smoke house in the backyard, and I can't even imagine taking pictures of anything smoking...

Anyway, to each their own...
Good thing you have pictures, otherwise you are a liar and it didn't happen! (Stale dale rules, Not mine)

You guys made me feel bad. I LOLed at your comments.

I don't think I'm supposed to do that about these type of things.
Nah.... You guys deserve a good laugh for having to deal with all this crap. I just re-read the thread, it's amazing how much TR changes his posts..... look at the difference from my quoting to his current posts....

#28 ·
TR,

I'm going wheelin.... your welcome to tag along. Hell, Dale and I didn't like each other until we met. After a weekend of wheeling he couldn't stop winking at me. I thought he was going to get lucky that last night...lol

If you can't go then that's OK you don't have to prove anyhthing...

In fact, if you want to just show up I have a spare seat for you. No hard feelings. Harlan is half way for both of us..... :)

That would explain the "Smoked Meat" forums? :(

More than 5 hours for me each way.
Believe I'll pass.

I'm not much into "Smoking Meat"...

Just for the record...

Smoking Meat Forums Try it out it's a fun Forum. Sorry that I don't have more time to spend there... Some really great Fattie ideas.

Good looking Cheese there 871... I'll just type 871 or TR since you are both Aaron... Post up a link to that Butt Bacon you had going a year or two back 871.

Hey TR... Did you notice that Brad posted up a couple of pictures from his weekend??

Actually 871 and I still might not see things exactly the same way... But he will have to admit that it was Ricky that gave me what I wanted when I came to their tent late that night.

I put that crap into my tank and didn't have to fill up for weeks.

Anyone that brings or makes fireworks during a Jeep weekend just might have issues with some of us.

Great Thread 871... How do you know if you laughed yourself into a hernia? This could be important....

Why would someone wheeling be a let down?

Anyway, my back is totaled, but it was a good time.
I took some pictures (Cell Phone), so even by 'Dale' standards, it was a good time.
Isn't anything like a paycheck for banging the hell out of new suspensions!
Looks like this version will hold up pretty good, which is good since they are in production.

Anyway, you guys will have to fight with each other, I have crap to do today...
Every day testing is followed by a 'Stiff Back' day of review meetings, so I'm stuck in an office all afternoon,
But I'm sure you guys can entertain yourselves!

Later!

Doing The Grinders (Quarry) outside (North) of Bedford next weekend, want to come?
One of the shooting locations for the movie 'Cutters'...

Rock Heads love that place, they have a 'BathTub' obstacle,
5 feet vertical wall, about 15 feet across the bottom, 5 foot vertical wall on the other side.
You get bragging rights if you can do it!
I'll even buy you a Gatorade if you can make it...

There is a rock pile of cast off limestone blocks that is pretty popular with the rock heads. Slabs measuring everything from about 3" thick to 5 feet thick all in a big pile.
It's a b!tch to even walk up, but there are a few that have driven up...
(I'm not one of them! Didn't make it half way up before I was broken)

Lime stone, plenty of traction, VERY hard on parts, especially winches.

Plenty of other rock obstacle trails if you want to do them...

GREAT clear water lakes for swimming, fishing, places to primitive camp, ect.
The guy charges $10 a head to get in and you have to sign your life away in wavers, but it's worth it!

We are only day tripping, I'm not spending the night unless I can't get my Jeep back out (Which is possible!) and we'll be up there both days unless One of us breaks something major.

Now, Why would you limit this to this board?

I posted on 4 or 5 boards before we did the Jeep Clinic,
I've posted on 4 or 5 boards about Grinders next weekend...

Seems like you would broaden your exposure so more people showed up rather than limiting it to one forum with very little traffic if you wanted a group of any size...

Grinder is going to be fun, and it's less than a hour away from me,
I can drive up there and don't have to trailer...

#43 ·
Now, Why would you limit this to this board?
First, I didn't limit it to this board. I rarely post any trips here, maybe because guy's like you pollute the thread to no end and never show up.

YOU sir are the reason a lot of people don't come here anymore including the others going on this trip. They don't want to post here and deal with you the way your acting in this thread. Seriously, who want's to post anything on this board when your here to "critique" them without wheeling with them.

Second, we have a core group of 5 solid rigs (all but one running 2.5 tons), why would we need more? You should consider it a privilege to be invited on a trip like this... I went as far as to offer you my passenger seat and in return you insulted me.

Third....... why do you even care if this is cross posted?

Your too scared to go so you booked a trip to the bunny trails where you don't need a cage or power steering or 4 point harnesses or any of your other excuses... I can most likely out wheel you in my barstool.

Considering the turnout of your Jeep Clinic..... :censored: You posted on 4 or 5 boards and had how many show up? And don't lie, because I can find out...

3 weeks notice, Holiday Weekend, we had somewhere between 8-9 people that were interested and showed up at the Clinic.

Two (plus me) stayed on site and attend every minute,
One from Dayton, OH, One from Louisville, Ky.,
And we had guys dropping by to say 'Hello',
We had guys that spent a few hours in the sun with us,
Some spent the day with us,
One guy came up from Evansville area on Sat. and Mon. but had family stuff on Sun...

We just had a casual cross section that wondered in and out at will.
Not a lot of guys, but with only 3 weeks notice and it being a holiday weekend, it wasn't bad.

I'm sure I could claim all the guys that stopped by for tools, air, to see what the deal was, ect.
But that wouldn't be fair since they weren't there for the 'Jeep Clinic'...

What stopped a lot of guys was the bad weather forecasts, which didn't happen...
And we had one guy that drove up there, but some drunk plowed down the highway sign, so he drove around for two hours, couldn't find the place, and went back home!
If I spend two hours on the road, then two hours looking for someplace, I'm damn sure going to find it! It becomes PERSONAL at that point, and I WILL Find it if it kills me! (even if I have to stop and ask directions! :p )
--------------------------------

And you can prang on me for worrying about 'Safety' all you wan to.
Doesn't concern me one bit!
Once you get a tree in the cab with you, trying to pin you between it and the stock bar,
Or you have a serious roll over scare, what some floating keyboard on the web has to say about it doesn't mean anything...

My straps are here, I have tubing on order for a Halo, I'll be ready soon enough...
I got WAY used to having a cage, belts, ect. and simply forgot what it was like without them and tried something stupid and scared myself out of complacency...
-----------------------------

SO!
Got any tips for the next dedicated Off Roader?
I've got a 2-1/2 ton in the 'Jeep Pasture' we are going up today to get some parts, (Axles, power steering pump, ect.) out of a J-20 Truck or scout...
Kerry hasn't made up his mind if he's going Scout axles or Full Size Truck axles...
I need power steering in the WORST WAY, so we are cutting one up today, just haven't made up our minds if there will be two or just one headed for the junk pile today...

This is the axle donor for my next dedicated build,

Image

Can't keep Kerry from breaking axles, just blew out a Dana 60 not long ago, so it looks like Duce axles in the next one...

As for 'Second Seating',
Thanks, but no thanks,

5+ Hour Drive both ways is the deal breaker, especially when there is work to be done on my own vehicle before it's ready for anything but a pass around McDonalds Drive through...

Think I'll get mine working a little better, or throw together a Truggy again and do some 'Home Turf' testing before I drive 10 hours to find the weak link...

From your Jeep Clinic Memorial Weekend, REDBIRD SRA. Thread.

OK!...

Weekend over,
Lot's of sunburn, busted knuckles, sleeping in a tent, but it's over and was a moderate success.
Starting small isn't a bad thing, and with very little notice of when/where this was happening it wasn't bad.

5 or 6 people showed up, two stayed all weekend in tents/hammocks (along with myself) and I had enough tools for everything we needed to do.
You've always had a hard time keeping your lies …er, stories straight.

Still waiting for my torch man to get his crap together...
Out fiddling with torch and welder.
Why we need a welder when we are grabbing axles and parts is beyond me, but this is what happens when you have someone with way too much 'Book Learning' and is short on field experience...

Two hours already with him saying the torch "Isn't Quite Right"...
this isn't a nuclear sub, we are only burning axles out of a old J-20 and snatching the power steering gear out of another one...

Why wouldn't a J-20 make a reasonable 'Truggy?
I'd be more inclined to use an F-250 if it had the correct axles already,
Chop some out of the frame and call it good,
But these guys are DEAD SET against using the J-20 frame, and won't give any reasonable explanation why...

Duce axles will go under ANYTHING, and since we aren't doing rear steer,
It's not like we have to narrow the back or anything...

I already have two AMC engines on stands doing nothing,
I have two FSJ transmssions/tranfer cases doing nothing,
There is a second TH-400 built and ready to go if we decide on automatic,
And there is a good FSJ T-18 with bell housing, clutch, everything else sitting here in the way...

WHY do they insist on Chevy or Ford frame when we have to start looking for drive train if we do?
I just don't get that, but when they get locked on something, there is little chance I'll talk them out of it unless I really put my foot down...
Then people get their feelings hurt and they wine about everything that goes wrong....
Same stuff that would go wrong no matter where the frame came from.
But they will, I've been through this before with them on the last FSJ build...

------------------------------

I see taz has jumped into the thread, so it's REALLY going to head down hill (just when you think it can't get any lower!)...
Spelling corrections or 'Cut-N-Paste' crap... It's always one of the two...

I know he's really reaching bottom when he compares me to President Obama!
If that hasn't happened already, then it's going to!
As long as he doesn't compare me to 'Shrub' (GWB) I'll be fine with it!

I kind of suspected he was on the back side of this somewhere when the quote about grilling seafood came up from YEARS ago...
No one trolls for hours through antique posts for anything *HE THINKS* might misdirect or something he can quote out of context to try...
He usually has the time to scour anything and everything...
Must be hard on him being that lonely...

Wish I had that much time and anger to do that, but I just can't afford the time or effort.
Life is happening to me, and I have to deal with it!

#49 ·
You can run rear steer rockwells on a J-20 frame without narrowing it. I ran narrowed fronts under my Kaiser for a few years before I gave up trying to deal with the front end issues.... that's where the clearance problems will be. It's hard to get acceptable up travel and keep the truck low. I think that goes with any frame though if you locate the front axle under the engine.

I don't chat with Taz, he has nothing to do with anything other than the 2 short comments he made.

I don't see a quote about grilling sea food anywhere in this thread? But, I'm sure it's his fault.

Jim Lou, I can't believe your still reading all of this dribble....:D
