I recently picked up a 93 XJ and have ridden in many. However, the overhead lighting scheme has always been subpar at best. I remedied this by going to the junk yard and finding a mid-90's GM car with a lighted rear view mirror. The mirror comes in three pieces. One the rear view mirror itself; two the cover that "hides" the wires/plug and three the wire/plug setup.

I removed my old mirror and put the lighted one on the stock mounting plate without any problems. Since mine had keyless entry, finding a close power wire was simple. Plus, there was a small hole that I used for grounding the mirror. BUT, the worst case is that someone has to run the power wire along the headliner down to the fuse block/another constant power lead. The only MINOR mod that needs to be done to the whole thing is to trim down the cover that hides the wires. Otherwise, it bites into the headliner....ask me how I know

This REALLY lights up the cab of the vehicle, the way it should've been stock. NOTE: The light has a third wire that can be added to the dome lights when you open the door.

I agree to that as well. I will be playing around with that next. Sadly, I am used to it with my other vehicles. If and when I figure SOMETHING out, I will let everyone know.

That is a good idea for an interior light. I am going to do that as soon as i can find a good u-pick it place around here. How much did you pay for yours? I made a few calls and they are talking about 20-30 bucks for the mirror.

Does the mirror with the electronic compass that GM (or anyone else) makes have a separate "compass" with the read out on the mirror? Just wondering if you or anyone else might know. It would be nice to be able to have a digital compass also reading out on the mirror.

That's about what I paid for my mirror and all the stuff that went along with it. As for the compass thing, the yard that I go to doesn't get that many things that are that new. SOOO, I don't know. BUT, I will check on it, IF I get a chance. I would opt to look for ANY newer minivans, fully loaded ANYTHING to see what is there. Good luck and you will be amazed on how much light those two little lights put out. I know I am.

As for the headlights, anyone ever try bigger wires/different ground?? Just a thought I had and was curious if anyone else had tried it yet or not?

Please forgive any spellng mistakes as I'm typing with a broken and splinted righ hand ring finger. I accidently slammed the XJ door on my hand.

Yes, I've done the larger ground wiresthing on my 1986 2.8 XJ but not as of yet on the 96. On the old 2.8, I found most of my dashboard devices were running very slow and the dash voltmeter was reading around 8 VDC but I had a full 13 at the battery. I had lost the main ground strap from the firewall to the engine block. WhatI did instead of replacing the strap was I ran 3 #10AWG wires from the firewall connetion directly to the neg post. Then I moved the starter ground up to the alternator bracket. Those two modifications did the trick. I had plenty ofjuice despite the small stock alternator.
