Well I finally got deep enough tearing my engine down today to finally find the damage I did when the cam bearing seized this winter....of course....the last thing I did was tear down the head....and that's wear the problem was!
When the cam stopped turning....the crank didn't....and the timing belt decided to stick with it! This is why I could get it to fire....but it never would start!!
And, while I am on the subject! Suzuki motors are incredible! With 250000 miles on mine....the bearings look like they have about 10000 on them....nice wear pattern, no scuffing on the crank. The rings just wore out....well and the cam thing

The only problem is....after I rebuild it, I will expect it to go another 250000....what do you think the odds of doing it twice are?? Slim...or none?
Even though...you guys that have seen me wheel know I am very easy on the old thing!

Unless you plan on spending a buttload of money to rebuild it to exacting specs , that engine will never live that long again . Most of the best reman motors go about 70% of their original mileage at best . First thing that is lost is the geometry of the crank and the thrust against the cylinder walls on the piston skirts . This is why Suzuki won't make pistons bigger than .020" over the original bore size .

I found something else while browsing the bottom end....when I took the valve cover off...one of the screws that hold the rocker shafts in place was missing...I thought maybe somebody just forgot to put it back.
NOPE....I found it when I pulled the oil pan off!!

Looks like it's been through the ringer too!! I found a scratch on the side if the block were it hit....but not a mark on the crank, or rod.

my 91 tracker had a simmilar problem, only the screw stopped the cam and the gear turned 8 deg befor the belt broke. it also cracked my cam. it ran after the new belt was installed but could not be timed. thats when i discovered the real problem.

the last 1300 i tore down had a rocker bolt in the oil pan.....along with some peices of oil rings, compression rings, and chunks of piston skirt.

even more amazing than the fact that it had less than 100k on it was that it still ran good. only reason i tore into the engine was to rob the oil an and pickup tube for a 1600.

as for remans......most are a real joke. i won't go into details but i know of many remans purchased from a distributor here in minnesota that have given up the ghost in less than 10k.

i like to compare remans to power tools. both the cheap china brand and higher priced dewalt or mikita might both be new and look very similar and sometimes even share the same platic outside, but one will out last and out perform the other in a big way.
