Back in the day I owned an '87 Honda 250R. It was a blast but I sold it over 10 years ago when my buddies sold theirs. Now after a long slumber, I am once again looking for a quad.

I am leaning towards another sport bike. I will have to get one for my wife too. I liked the Bombardier DS650 Baja and my wife likes the Yamaha Raptor.

The other side of the spectrum is the 4x4 quad. We both like the Yamaha Grizzly 660.

I have never riden a 4x4 quad. I always liked blasting up the dunes and across the desert. With my 4Runner, I think we get the trail riding in. I can't cruise up the dunes at high speeds in my 4Runner.

What is your opinion?

What a perfect post. I too had quads back in the day and sold them due to financial hardships. After a good 12 year hiadus, I decided to return to the ATV realm. I started off with a Recon (Honda 250 utility) for work around the house and trail riding. I bought a Foreman (Honda 450 utility) for Search and Rescue and more intense trail riding. It is a 4X4 and has low gearing for trail riding, mountain climbing and does very well around the house pulling trailers, discs, and drags.

I have decided to look into a TRX450R for the next quad. I like the Foreman, but I have the need for some speed and suspension. I have started retuning to the dunes and would like to have something a bit more peppy in the dunes. Dont get me wrong, the Foreman in 4by will climb any dune out there, just a lot slower than everyone else...

THe big problem that I ran into (as probagbly most people) where do you get a quad to test drive where you ride to see if you like it and it does what you want it to do. Try to get a friend to let you ride their quad and see what you like the best. I like the utility quads for the million uses that they have, but I do miss the speed...

I'm rather old school. I don't like any of the things that have come out in the last 5 years.

If I were to buy a 4x4, it'd be a Scrambler 400. If I wanted something to tool around the woods with and my butt never left the seat it'd be a 400EX. If I was still the kid that rode his quad 4 hours a day every day I was 6 or 7 years ago I'd have a Banshee.

The used ATV market is a lot cheaper than it was 10 years ago. It's mostly due to everyone wanting the biggest, baddest quad out there. All three of those machines are light enough to pick up and move around.
