There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Well, after 3 long years and a total frame up rebuild, I fired up the '83 CJ-7 last night, then took it for a little drive.
Unbelieveably, every switch, lamp and gauge works - no matter how Painfull [sic] the wiring job was.
The 4.2 with the Hesco 4.0 head MPI & Borla mill feels awfully strong.
I was a little worried because it ran pretty rough during the first 10 minutes in the garage. Then, all of a sudden (just as if the Jeep God flipped a switch) the new mill smoothed out and purred. I don't even want to guess why it woke up so groggy (like me this morning) - could have been a number of things ....
The neighbors will have to forgive me for the following two after-midnite test drives - one in high gear and the second in Tera 4to1 low. It was a nice cool night and I was giving it lots of accel/decceleration - they must have been getting ready to call the cops!
The the cool night, the throatty sound of the Borla, the little whistle of the MPI and the purring mill had me on cloud 9.
I still have a ways to go to get it road worthy - a windshield will help! - but getting past this major milestone left me with a silly grin on my face in the wee hours and, after after a few cups of coffee this morning, the goofy grin returned and is showing no signs of going away .... maybe it's an uncurable Jeep thing!

Thanks to all for the great support, tips and ideas over this long haul.
I just wanted to share my success with every one here since so many of this forum's members have been a great and valuable part of my project.

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

The computer in the MPI kit takes a little while to "learn" what is going on with the engine as far as fuel mixture, timing, etc. upon initial fire-up. Once it has a good sample of data from the various sensors it can determine what the best mix is of those things (mixture, timing, etc.). Anytime you clear the memory it will do the same thing. It's perfectly normal for all modern fuel injection systems to do this and if they are working right, they all smooth out with a little time running. Congratulations on getting it out of the garage under its own power John. I have been watching your buildup for quite a while and it is truly a thing of beauty!

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Glad to hear it Jaffer!
Watch everything VERY closely for the first 2,500 miles or so...
Be sure to make passes under it, and through the engine bay putting a wrench on EVERYTHING to make sure it got tightened up, or stays tight...

Frame up builds present a lot of opportunity for 'loose this' and 'leaking that' to happen...
Don't forget to change the oil very frequently on the first few hours...
That's where most of the solid metal flakes get into the system...
I usually change it after cam break in, then again at about 100 miles.
You wouldn't believe what shows up in the oil after initial start up!!

Glad to hear of your success, and good luck,
Aaron.

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Aaron-
Thanks, and thanks for the tips!/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
This is only my second engine build. The first was in the late 1960's for my old '57 Chevy (2-door hard top) strip-only dragster. A long time ago ....
Didn't have any trouble with that one either. I'm on a roll!

Gad, that thing was strong.
I had the head done (got to watch) by the top guy in Mesa AZ (Bill Cox)- 7 angles, no less ... with the nicest thin seats you'd ever want to see with a gentle hand-lap at the end - it was just like he was kissing it!
Man, that guy was good. Those double hump Corvette heads were pretty expensive back then to begin with even before he got ahold of them.
He and Dean Turk ran a shop (S&S Headers) in Phoenix and a fuel rail on weekends.
Dave- You'd had liked these guys ... They hand cut and torch welded all their production headers and did the same on rail frames, roll bars, you name it.
And the prettiest beads you'd ever see ....

I was wondering when to do the first oil change.
What's the average cam break in period for the first one?
I have about 45 minutes, total, on it so far.
About 15-20 min in the garage with a stand-up fan on the rad.
An hour cool down, then the two short hops in the cool night air ... including a gentle run-out down the nearby boulevard with the TC in High on the first hop.
Still groggy this morning ...
I'll need a refill and ditch the first batch of oil soon.
And I'll drain it while it's hot.
Got to get rid of that assembly lube.
I heard that stuff will eat a new filter pretty quick.
The OP looks real good (45 to 65 psi at 1K through 2.5K RPM so far) with a good swing on the AutoMeter on rev.

Yep, I'll have so spend the best part of a day going over every nut and bolt.
I haven't seen a drop on the floor so far....
You can bet I've had a hand on the the brake line connections right after the first hop.
Every fastener on the whole rig is new and I have to have missed something - like that lower radiator hose clamp I thought I had tighened last year! Not everything is going to give me a green, wet reminder.

Again, thanks.
And thanks for being such a valuable resource here.
You give a LOT better wiring answers than I!
I'm going to keep my trap shut a little more from now on when I see one./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

How much did the whole setup for the engine cost? I'm very interested!

1999 Dodge Neon Sport, 35" Swampers w/7" Custom Skyjacker lift, RTI of 1034,
Blown 454 w/Turbo 400 tranny, 4wd drive conversion...okay, I'm BSing /wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif John,....there is something about the gentle smoke from new paint rising out of the engine compartment and everything so shiny and clean. Whether it is your first engine powered "rail job" at twelve years of age, or a classic Jeep at fifty-five, the feeling is the same when it moves under it's own power for the first time. If you are driving something down the raod, and you know that you have at one time held every part in your hand, that's a great feeling./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I've never hesitated to gather up a big wad of parts, build the engine, slap it in, and then take off for parts unknown, KNOWING that everything is the way it is supposed to be./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif I tell ya, John, our new 4.0 coughed up MORE STUFF into the pan than any engine I ever owned/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif I was really worried.../wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif.....so much so that I saved oil samples for over a year from every change. It finally quit, and has 103K on it now and refuses to use or leak any oil. It has oil pressure characteristic of the "Old" Chrysler family./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Thanks, and thanks for the re-assurance about the computer's "brain", Skip.
I guess(ed) it was either that or (worse) a dry lifter, clogged injector from the new lines, fouled plug ... list goes on ...
You can imagine what MY brain was during those first few minutes.../wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Awsome,
John,
Its great to hear that you are able to drive it...I know that you have been able to calm my nerves a few times when I had problems. Mine just got a few setbacks. I finaly got my High-flow water pump from 4wdhardware and put it on only to find out that the radiator that I got from pepboys was cracked where the hose tube was welded on to the bottom of rad when I started it up./wwwthreads_images/icons/mad.gif
But, on a better note, I'll just take the radiator back and then I'll head over to nappa with measurements to find a 3 core radiatior. Hopefully when it all gets put back together, it'll run just fine/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif. Well, atleast that's the plan the moon guys and I hashed out after a fit of rage last night when we discovered the crack in the new radiator. It's amazing what a couple of beers can do for the senses.

...get some pic's up....

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Dave- that 'gentle cloud of cooking paint' you referred to was making me VERY nervous ... until I got it out of the garage after a good, long cool-down.

Robert-
Mine started to get hot after the first 10 minutes and I was thinking of you.
I'm sure it's just temporary. With my 3-core and hi-volume water pump, no shroud, and questionable junk yard short shafted fan clutch; the new AutoMeter cyl head temp gauge stayed at just over 190* in the cool night air.
And don't feel like the lone ranger with the rad crack.
My son cracked the new/rebuilt 3-core the first time he hoarsed the lower hose on when back when he had the CJ-7 three years ago.
I took some stranded 10 Ga copper wire, pounded it into a flat braid and torched acid core lead solder with it on top of that area where the crack was - right where the tube goes into the lower chamber on the bottom side ... sound familiar??

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Actually it sounds real familure...but since it is new I'm just going to return it anyway...I had just put it in and the hose fit rather easily...I figure that it got dammaged in shipping...I had to wait a week and a half to get it...I'll loose my shipping fee, but I might as well get a 3 core for her.../wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif...It was just frustrating to have something like that happen right before I was going to be able to drive it/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif...I've also been following the cheap electric fan post...I think that I'll spend some time in the local junk yards after finals end on next saturday and see if I can find myself a set of fans...I just can't wait to get it done.

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

I think this is a good example of a real good way to go. All you guys wanting to replace your 258 with a Chevy, Ford or even AMC V8 are just causing yourself a lot of, IMO, unneccessary work. the 258 is a torque monster, and with a little tweaking, you can have quite a motor. A lot can be done even without the expense of the Borla header and the 4.0 head, these are 4bys, not dragsters. As Jaffer knows, I have a spare 258 thats getting a rebuild shortly and going in to replace the tired one in my Jeep, and its going to be a stocker with a little bigger cam and the Weber. And guess what, it will be able to do everything that fire breathing 350 can do, and probably with a better bottom end. There have been a zillion arguments on this and the old bbs on this subject, but I encourage anyone that has a 258 and is considering a swap to take a look at stuff like what Jaffer has done, and what I'll be doing here shortly. Heck, I can get a complete rebuild kit from NAPA for $404 for the 258. Just my 2 cents on a beat to death subject. BTW, I said this over the phone, but her it is in print, congrats and good going John.

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Robert-
Don't get too antsy.
The old fashioned clutch fan works better and is more reliable than any electric.
You and I will just have to find that elusive shroud for a 3-core since the old 2-core won't fit so good now.
There is no longer a step forward at the top along the top rad chamber.
The 3 core sits flush with the mount surface and the filler is now center.
Watch for fan clearence, the new rad just stepped back a notch!
Hence my junk yard Ford clutch.
I've still heard nothing about the missing half of the part number for that puzzeler either! The CJ was still my son's when I micky rigged this shorter shaft. The fan was buzzing the new 3-core. I didn't feel the need to jot down the now-missing numbers before I slotted the holes for this junk yard find. The Jeep has a slightly wider bolt pattern.

See .. http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/FanShaft.htm

I have had some shroud leads and suggestions, but not solid year, model, part #'s so far.
Anyone ??

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Jaffer, thats great, its something to be really proud of... I'd like to say that when I took my rebuilt CJ7 out for the 1st time a few months back, every thing worked. I still have an erratic fuel gauge that I'm trying to nail down. Plus, I had to bleed my brakes a couple of times before they worked the way I wanted them to. Its a great feeling when the "Beast" comes back to life. Congrats.....

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Steve (DrummondCJ)-
Thanks.
I have been trying to learn more about the pre-1980 CJ fuel gauges.
The principal electronics are the same for all of the CJ's.
See.. http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/Gauges.htm
The sender wire or the sender's ground are the primary culprit for working but erratic fuel gauges.
Apparently, buying a replacment pre-1980 fuel gauge is an "iffy" proposition, depending on the year and whether that year had the same sender specs as the later, '80-'86 models.

Re: There\'s a new Jeep in town!

Rodney (JeepSkate)-
Thanks.
Though it was never a race, last year I thought for sure you would beat me to the street. That was, however, before your bout of Scramble Fever!
Now, let's see if I can get a beefier tranny and new axels under mine before you get the top half done on yours...
I'm starting to feel my age and I need all the incentive I can get.
I know you've been doing more work on it than you web site lets on. I bet you've got the wheels on it!!!
