i got a loan today for "truck repair" in the amount of $1100 funny beings my new gears and detroit are $1067! well i go to sign the papers tomarrow and i drop the truck off tomarrow night
Image

~~i am only doing the loan to establish a regular payment and build credit, plus i like the idea of only having to pay a minimum of $33 a month for the new toys~~
they are keeping the truck for 2 days, one for install and one for break in. they said the warranty sticks if they do the break in but not if i do it, rules are rules i guess. i said go for it then......same price. i was told that when they do it they can also hear if its too loud or need to be adjutsed and such....all seems good to me.
anywho, i had to share my joy!

like i was telling ya the other night,
keep below speeds of 50mph
dont keep a constant speed for long periods of time
no full throttle starts
reverse to neutral to drive, to avoid a lot of shock
all untill 500-700 miles
this will keep the gears from whining and the lash willl be consistant throughout the gear
and then

just like that pot roast in the oven, well worth the wait, peacock was telling me something about your fan shroud, about some homeade clips or something, anyways, have ya tried to move the fan with the engine off, to check the clutch?

#5 ·
i haven't tried moving it yet, but i will. peacock is rambling on about the fact that i have a body lift so there is a 3" gap in the shroud. i believe, or he is giving me [bleep] for the fan shroud accounting for the extra 2 cylinders....that guy is always on my case.

how would you suggest i do highway driving on say this monday? right lane pissing people off at 35-45-35-45 mph. i mean i dont care if i have to but if it would be horrible maybe i could take my moms car.

back roads??, you might get in trouble doing 35 on the highway. enjoy the scenery.
Thats right, the shroud is mounted on the lower crossmember, you should put some braces up to the core support and mount it thier, it'll help your cooling out too, by closing off that area. i might have some perforated flat stock lying around i can cut up for ya, plus some spare 4.2mm and 5mm body clips (if ya lost one like peacock was saying)

well for one shorts, the Flash isn't just "that guy" he is somebody!
no i was just wondering because i wanted to take my truck to funks house and not some car. but i guess that will have to be the case unless i wait a little while.

yeah i was making fun of the fan shroud for the fact that 25% of the engine is missing so that they could fit that particular fan shroud in the engine bay. but since the fan shroud is now cut and cobbled together, i just todssed that out as a possibile cause of teh noise you're hearing.

#11 ·
the noise is a week old and the BL lift is way older than that, so i dont know. one of these days between myself, peacock, the funk we will figure it out.
~and i dont know the back roads beween my house and funkers well enough to drive it. highway he is 2 1/2 hours away, who knows on back roads.

well it came stock with 235's and im running 31"s for winter, so that will help. then the gf will be in town this weekend so i will get as many miles on in short trips as i can. i get the truck back thursday night so i have until monday morning to get miles on the gears/locker. i could odd speed the gears till lansing.....let them cool good and then head your way.

sparty,
my point about the modified fan shroud is that it has more or less been cobbled together. i know its been like that for a while and has been alright. i had a set of tires for a while and things were less than alright with them. I was implying that some sort of clip, brace, or whatever may have rattled off or cracked or soemthing of that nature.

good news and bad

i just went out to the truck to look at the fan and try to spin it.....the truck is gone. then i remembered that the truck is parked in DTS and installation begins in the morning, i am out of it right now yes. but happy none the less.

~~~~~UPDATE~~~~~
i just got off the phone with DTS. i had a bad axle shaft (right rear) and the bearings were so worn that they were ruining the housing. the had a "good used" axle shaft that he is selling me for $50. he also suggested a aluminum girdle cover to help prevent "cap walking" i believe is what he called it (that is $140). i figure i might as well do it and do it right, so what is the consensius on that?
#20 ·
i guess the cap walking is the bearings moving around slightly back and forth. the girdle cover adds more support and helps keep that from happening, extending the life of everything invloved. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
See if you can get the guy to hang on to your old axle so you can feel a little more confident that you didn't get tricked.
If you are convinced you need the cradle, get the installer to guarantee that price and shop around for a better one. You will want to change the lube after a while anyway. I believe summit carries those cradle covers. Is your truck so special that you need one.
I don't know the installer but it is sounding like a bait and switch. Pay attention.
I wish I had those gears and locker. Enjoy.
well i believe him because he is reputable and know nationally. also, before i took it in i had a slight grind during acceleration and a thump once almost stopped. he said that those noises were due to these problems, and he didnt know of them until after he told me of the axle issues, i didnt give him an excuse to screw me. i am also keeping all old parts and having them inspected by someone outside of that shop, just to be sure. also i dont believe my truck is so special, i do believe that a shop has it taken apart and is doing an excellent job on it that i couldnt do. thats make me think that i dont have the time to shop around much and should do it correctly as long as i am spending this much.......thanks for all the replies
ok one more thing to add that i forgot.....the new cover has a drain plug on it. i dont know if that adds any value other than ease during gear oil changes, but thought i would add it to your knowledge of the situation.
