YES, I KNOW MANY OF YOU DISAGREE WITH ME BUT IF YOU WATCH SOME OF THE LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 RACES THEY HAVE IN EUROPE AND IN THE TROPICS, YOU WOULD SAY, "AWESOME!!!!"

I totally dig those rigs! I cannot afford one but I love the longer wheel base ones what are they 110s? I am building a sammy hardtop with external rollcage inspired by that 90 defender look. Cant wait till its done. Max, Oh yeah if you have a website that shows those races your talking about, send them my way.

hey there mr lites,
have you ever seen a mercedes glendevagon? (means "earth car" in german) they are pretty rare here in the US. they only imported for 2 yrs and nobody bought them becuse they were too hardcore for the price. nobody wants to wheel a $50-60k truck (that can afford it). anyway i would venture to say that they are even more kick butt than a land rover in stock form. they are raced in paris to dakar quite often. they look like a big suzuki samari with a big mercedes star on the front.

And you didn't think i could make it through?
G
Tom, yes I know what you are talking about. I seen them two times, in those car magazines, Moter Trend, Car & Driver, Road & Track. It is better than a Mercedes M-Class. I never saw one on the road thou. I heard that it sometimes used by the German army. I think that is what those car magazines said about it.

G
I don't know about it being the "best" off-road vehicle but it is way cool. I have wheeled with a few of them before and they do very well, not to metion I love the looks! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

the mercedes glendevagon is still imported at arate of aprox 25-50 a year by a dealor down in florida.. but its realy not all that.. yes it has 3 locking diffs stock.. but thats all it has over a d90.... now a unimog.. well thats a differant ball game all together.. ill get one of those after i get me a yellow d90.. now if only rover would listen when we ask for the turbo diesel powerd d90's... i say start importing them!

It is Gelaendewagen, which means cross-country in German. It is used by many armies in Europe. Only a few are imported each year to the US because MB does not want to sell them here, a few companies can import them. Plus, they cost much more than 50K, more around 80K. Yes, they will kick the crap out of any stock LR.

Let's not forget the Hummer. I think it' better than anything but the Unimog. I dig the Hummer's goofy inboard dick brake set up.

G
hummers? yha right..... gutles, lack of a real crawl ratio, verry poor articulation, and way to ez to high center.. not to mention the fact that the only trail around here you could get one down is paved.. they are just to wide and have to limited turning rad... sorry... id take a samuri over a hummer for trails around here..

First off I meant to say disc brake. I did notice that you did not argue with my contention that the Unimog is the best 4x4 or 6x6 ever made. Good old German engineering. Vorsprung durch technic. That's German for "I like to kick Samurai butt.". In my opinion the three finest 4x4's ever made are in this order: Mercedes-Benz Unimog, AM General Hummer/Humvee, and the Land Rover Defender 110. All three are world class vehicles in use by military organizations and proffessional expedition teams around the world. They may be exclusive and high end, but that is merely the price of admission to real 4x4 prowess. I myself came up with this list after careful research. I noticed that many of the worlds premier expedition teams are using these same vehicles to go places a regular 4x4 can't and they're doing it without the aid of lift kits, axle swaps, or engine swaps. Often they add a roll cage, winch and a roof rack. The vehicle drivetrain is bone stock! In the case of the Defender they add lockers front and rear because it doesn't come equipped that way from the factory. The Benz and Hummer come with with lockers front and rear. I myself will soon purchase a 4x4 made by Land Rover for recreational use. Probably a Range Rover or Discovery. These three vehicles aren't for everybody. They require careful maintenance and a real finesse to take off road. I applaud you for fixing up a Samurai and taking it off-road. By doing so you are helping to dispel the "Girl-ute" myth about these vehicles.

OH Yea---I've seen them out there...they got lockers front and rear. Maybe an option. Now they have traction control that uses ABS(I think?). They are brute force vehicle made to take a beaten, dropped from choppers, and carry heavy loads, travel over a wide land mass, deep water crossings, and get there in a hurry. As the Gulf war proved, they excell at this. They get through by momentum.

4x4's are like people, some do things better than others and vice vera.

G
i realise they are available in the aftermarket, but i havent seen any with a FACTORY locker.. and if they did it would prob be a gov-lock..... one of the most useless lockers out there.. lock-rites are stronger than a gov-lock is..

Ops your right, not a "locker". Zexel-Torsen torque biasing diff (more like a LSD?). They may not be as good as a locker, but they work!. Sorry about the terminology.

G
yep... just what i allways want to do as im about to get stuck.. hit the brakes to tranfer the torque to the other tire... lol.. wow that works great... now the brakes are causing drag and slowing down a rig that normaly uses momentum to get past obsticles.. hmmmmm... thease are the same engineers that built the corvair? right? lol...

honestly tho.. yes, i do give the hummers some credit.. they are a awesome pice of machinery, and they make for an exelent source of parts for project rigs ie: reduction hubs etc.. and civilian ones do a great job of taking up extra parking spots..

Yea! that about says it all! They're fun to watch but better in the military. I've seen them stuck where a small but custom cj ate it up. There size is they're disadvantage for the civilian ranks!

Take care and hold on to the amo!

G
Personally, i think the range rover is better than the defender 90. the range rover chassis is better than that of the 90's. dont get me wrong, i love ALL land rovers especially defenders but i would rather drive a range rover than a defender, on or off-road.

Hummers are cool but who wants to spend $80K on a tin can(w/out leather seats)

G
I will agree with you on that, I LOVE my '87 RR. You have to figure that they have 80% the same suspension, so their capabilities should be similar. The only drawback to the rangie is the rear overhang. If you were to lose that you would have a nice leather clad Defender.

there is some conversion that you can get that removes most of the back of the range rover(i think only classics) for off roading.
