ive seen these things around, and i was wondering. is the Explorer Sport trac any good for going offroad???

#3 ·
I dont think so, my brother tells me his fishing buddy traded in his nissan pickup for one and did hundreds of dollars worth of damage to the front suspension the first trip out on a rough dirt road to his fishing grounds(the same path he used every weekend in the nissan without any trouble)...
But like STEVE says, its just another yuppie mobile, not really intended for off-road use, just another SUV but with a bed on it if you wanna call it one, bathtub would be a better description./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

actually ya i was considering one...ya i know it is a total yuppie mobile, but look at the Jeep grand cherokee that thing shouts yuppie at the top of its lungs but i know so many people who have grand cherokees that keep up with wranglers.

so alotta front end damage huh??? well maybe ill have to reconsider. now i know the bed is like a bathtub(hey maybe ill get creative and water proff the bed and make a hot tub for the women ;)

anyways, if i do get one im gonna raise it up hella and that little bathtub would be nice for some extra gear to load up....it looks about as capable as a 4-door ranger

did your buddy that goes fishing buy a brush guard???

Re: 4-door Ranger

ya, i think i will buy one. do they make lifts for them???

ive heard so much about people loving their rangers for offroad and i have 2 basic weaknesses: a 4door truck that is offroad capable and a mint condition shelby mustang fastback GT500 but the chances of finding even a messed up GT500 would be 1 in a million so i think ill buy a sport trac.

wanna hear a funny story...i first saw the sport trac commercial at like 4am and the next morning when i woe up, i thought i had dreamed it all....

it seems you arent a fan of this SUV...i dont see why. i mean it is about the size of a ranger, has a similar engine. so why are you totally bashing it?? so what if its a yuppie mobile outa the box. so is just about every single truck/SUV from 97' and up. the ST explorer just seems more capable than alot of the newer cars....also it could be 10x worse....i could be buying an import SUV(aka Rav4)

I would assume that the lifts for Explorers should fit. I know I have seen pics of a lot of lifted Sport Tracs in the mags. And the Mazda truck is based on the Ranger-not the other way around. Would some one explain to me and everyone else what the major difference between this vehicle and a Ranger is-or an Explorer for that matter? Let's see they all (Sport Trac, Explorer, Ranger) use 4.0 engines, auto overdrive trannies, 8.8 rear ends, IFS front ends, and cost too much. It's rear suspension is more like an Explorer than a Ranger though. As far as the after-market support goes it looks like the Sport Trac has it made. I don't think there is enough difference between any of these to say one is better than the other. The Sport Trac is obviously the most versitile. The bigest draw back is the price. If you have no problem affording an Explorer then go ahead. If you want to save several thousand you may want to consider an extended cab Ranger. Speaking of imports the Nissan Frontier 4 door with a supercharged v-6 is about 10 thousand dollars less-for example. Laters.

Most of the Rangers ive seen had 2.0l and 2.3l fours the 4.0 is an OHV. The new Explorers have a different 4.0, it an SOHC. Explorers were available with a 5.0l.
I dont dislike the Sport-trac all that much, except for the height of the bed, but the initial question (is it capable off-road?)i`ll just say ,Dont forget the cell phone/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif...

wha!? you mean imports are actually good for offroad...oh man that is news to me. after seeing the rav4,pathfinder,Xterra, etc etc(you know the ugly ass SUVs) i figured all the import SUVs and trucks were grocery getters

PS: is swear taboo here??? if so, sorry

i worded that quite wrong, i shoulda said the new imports. besides, toyota is the only import company that is able to make decent SUVs...why they dont anymore is beyond me.

i didnt mean those SUVs/trucks those ones are awsome

Imports

I've been working on a Jaguar/Land Rover dealership for a few months & I designed the new rock display for the Rovers. I read a Rover publication that lists almost every spec for every US-market SUV in 2001 and came up with a simple 27-degree slope made of natural Arkansas stone with a 3.5" articulation (7" to the R at the bottom & 7" L at the top) & 6" ground clearance. After the runs shown here and a new Discovery II had sat on it for a few weeks, the head salesman bet the Nissan salesmen $50 that they couldn't get one of their vehicles to the top. They brought around one of their SUVs (I can't remember exactly which model they chose - they all look the same/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif) and couldn't even get the back wheels off the pavement. Nuff Sed.

Cost

Have you looked at the Discos? Twin solid axles, V8, brush guards that don't interfere with the airbags, 4WABS w/traction control, seating for 7, cupholders for about 10/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif, 4W disks... just everything the Jeepers try to build, but it has a WARRANTY and you can make PAYMENTS. I'm not in the market for a $35K truck, but it sounds like you are.

Re: Disco

naw, thats way too far out of my budget. the ST explorer is only like 24-25,000 maybe even 19 if i find an old one from the end of the year clearance..i mean they dont sell that well and they need to make room for other cars so the price of it will lower significantly

Andrew...,

I am not a fan of the Flipsploror, or it's sister the ST.

While not trying to Bash it in my last post, I was just trying to state some facts about it't roots.

Most reviews have it(Exploror) listed as a gas hog, but then so is the Ranger(worse than my Bronco).

I am a fan of the import trucks and the suvs based on them (such as the Toy or the Nissan[man are they ugly]). I may get a beating for saying this but the Big Three can't compete on the small stuff. Nissan and Toys will regularly get 250k plus on their engines. Ford can't say that, niether can Cheby.

One correction(jokingly) to your statement...the RAV4 is not a SUV. It is a taller car that can be driven in the grass without causing major problems.

Havack!

The main difference in my truck and yours is your truck is a toy and my truck is a truck!

Hehe, that's why you get a PowerStroke F350. Not only do you get an engine that will last to 300K, you can get better gas mileage than a toyota, and you can pull 10 Toys behind you on the interstate at 70 mph. FORD (ok, INTERNATIONAL)!.

JEEP, it's what's for dinner.

So Havack, you really think the new Nissan Frontier is ugly? Im trying to decide between the Tacoma crew and the Frontier crew cabs. The toyo has a good reputation and better looking grill, but a complicated DOHC head set-up and most everything on the list is optional. The Frontier includes most all STD.(power windows, locks, mirrors, etc.)available now with a 5ft.bed on the crew, and the old trusty 3.0 SOHC engine is easy to work on...
Yeah that brawny looking grill is just plastic though, but you can get it well equipped for about 20K.
