/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif This morning I was noticing that it was almost time to take both my Indy car teams (I WISH!)to "The Brickyard" for the 30 days of pre-race testing and so forth, and I was thinking about the race and how it has been such a staple of motor racing for over eighty years. How would it be to have a cross-counntry Jeep Race? You could begin in Downtown LA or some equally urban spot, and end in Portland Maine. The route would be designed such that you just couldn't build a single-purpose Jeep and get by. Like there would be hundreds of miles of freeway that required good gearing for fuel mileage, steep country that required good off-road capability to keep people from dumping out the front drive to save weight and fuel. Time and distance would be controlled on the long paved stretches; to make it interesting and prevent overspeeding; and specified overnight stops would be included. Sort of like the great auto races, but would include cross-country routing as well as pavemment. Make a few rules, like it has to be a Jeep body (not frame), and maybe a Jeep engine, but leave it fairly open otherwise, because the conditions would naturally dictate the equipment mix. The truth is, that a new TJ would be pretty darn competitive right out of the box, so you'd need to make the course a bit tougher than a completely stock Jeep could "easily" handle in places just to keep things interesting. Stage the starts over a three-day period to avoid congestion./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Dave,

First let me say "Congrats" on your daughters graduation. How bout something like a "Gumball Rally" but just a little bit safer. I think any rally of the sort involving Jeeps would be cool, what do you'all think?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Thanks, Boog....You know, when I was posting that race post, I was trying to think of that term that they used for the time-distance cross country races, and all that would come to mind was "motocross" which I knew wasn't it. "RALLY"...yeah...that's the word/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif could I have been having my very first "Senior Moment"...you know it, but can't think of it?/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Congratulations Again about your Daughter.
As far as Jeep races go... They have an annual hot-rod show that comes into town every year. They go from Texas to Canada. Really nice rods. One of them is a 900 Horesepower CJ. It is bad. Original frame and body, that is about it though. It sits at an angle and the passenger seat has been replaced by a Nitrous bottle. It would not make it off road but it is still BAD. I will try to get some pics for ya'll this year.

There is a classic car race that is run every summer. They run in different classes and they are given a calabrated spreedo and have to get from point A to point B as close to a specific time as possible. You could do something similar with Jeeps. The race I want to see is a New York City to Moscow across the north pole.

Hey CJ-Dave, thanks for the idea. I'll start building my Jeep for it right away. Lets see, has to be streetworthy...33s and 4.10s (BFGs rule on the street so I'd uyse them...) a Shackle reversal and 4" of lift on the '89 Wrangler...OME springs with the add-a-leaf and slightly extended shackles. A 4.0L stroked, Jet-chipped and supercharged for good power and fuel mileage. On board air since we'll have to go offroad and then back on-road, and a good stereo to make those on-road stretches more bearable. A nice racing seat and harness.... Who could we get to sponsor it though? A gas station to just pay for the gas for the racers would be fine if enough people could take off a week from work. 2-3 man teams and no chase vehichles. A Jeeping Cannonball Run!

Hey CJDAVE, This sounds like a great race that should be run with All 4x4's from the factory each year for braggin' rights. I have a feeling the boys in detroit may find a way to proffit though.

You would have to make sections of it so brutal that factory rigs would really struggle, other wise it would be just a manufacturers showcase of,Suzuki Vehicross',mercedes benz, and lexxus, with there windows rolled up and AC blasting. I mean if you want to make it a Jeep type of a race, you really have to face the facts, there are only a few areas where we(Jeep owners) really shine. So if its not set up to mercilessly drag the tranny pans right off of a bunch of low slung comfy SUVs, then we better try to just beat them in a longevity contest over the course of say 25 or 30 years. A few laps through Dusi Ersham,Telico,Choke Cherry,Moab(I dont mean to leave out anyone favorites) these trails should weed out the confy SUVs at about the same attrition as the Jeeps climbing Tahachapi Grade on 100 deg day. That should level the playing field. After all we would still have to deal with leaving the Jeeps unattended,(to eat and mandatory sleep)(Possibly in NY,or LA), and still return and find enough of your vehicle still there to continue.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif You'd be surprised at what a minor obstacle it would take to stop ninety per cent of the pavement SUVs......just ONE LOG of a specific diameter would do it. Hopping that ONE log would put an equipment requirement on the vehicles that would greatly influence any of them who were serious about the race. OR....if you had 100 yards of uphill in snow. Right there you eliminate anyone who doesn't actually have FWD, but has the "Yuppie button" to push that SAYS FWD.....like my neighbor's Exploder.....the one that can't quite seem to GET into FWD. I'm always surprised at how marginal some SUVs actually are. Too many are too low, and too many are too heavy on the front axle./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gifThe vehicle that I have come to admire and being a VERY capable off-roader with just a few mods, and provides all the creature comforts you need, and has tons of power, and gets super fuel mileage....sounds too good to be true doesn't it......THE JEEP CHEROKEE. Not the GRAND Cherokee like I drive, the REGULAR Cherokee, which weighs 740 pounds less than my Grand does, yet is available with the same perky 4.0 and the superior 242 transfer case. For the long mileage that I run, I wanted a bit more luxury, but for going through the snow to the mailbox, it would be hard to beat a regular XJ/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gifThey are a real contender in a lot of ways./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Thanks for the kind words about the Cherokee XJ, Dave!/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
Still, I think I'll keep mine with its tiny 2.8L V-6 on the porch for this one (0 to 60 in "What's your hurry, buddy"!)/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Actually, I think the 5.9L V-8 ZJ or the new 4.7L V-8 WJ Grand Cherokees could blow the doors off all the SUVs around today; they would win the 1/4 mile for sure./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

So...run the race with two classes- Stock and Modified. Stock may include items to disconect things of course. Like removing the track bars and having Swaybar Disconects. I suppose we'd have to allow people to open their spring clamps and paint their leaves with graphite paint too, which would require allowing the use of extended brake lines and shocks. That would pretty much be the limit of what you can do to a stock YJ's suspension while keeping it stock. 31" tires fit just right on a stock rig and I'd think that in the modified division the street requirements would keep things to 33" tires and down...

Hey Sycho if there is a modified class then let them run whatever tire they want. If they want to aim 44" swappers down a highway and still expect to be able to drive at a reasonable speed then that is there problem to deal with. Let modifieds be as modified as they want as long as they are street legal.

To further handicap extreme modifications, you could limit the top speed to the legal limit and limit the amount of fuel carried, but make fuel stops part of the "race". That way a Jeep with loads of spare parts, heavy axles, gnarly tires, & a fire-breathing 454 under the hood would be at a disadvantage on pavement for the shere number of fuel stops it would need. 'Course such a machine would gain back some points as it passed through Missouri, where I'd conduct a mud bog competition for the contestants! But, I REALLY want video of the glacier crossing that will surely be one leg of the competition!!!
