Take it or leave it

Hello everyone. I have always been into fullsize rigs, three fords and two chevys, but I just came into the prospect of a free jeep. My brother owns a 1986 jeep cherokee with a just replaced 2.8L engine, 904tranny, and the comand track tranfer case (i am not even sure which that is, but I think the NP231). The truck has been sitting around for about 7or 8 months unused, and I know it probably needed a transmission back when he stopped driving it, and the engine runs a little off because the carb was not set up properly. Both of these I can fix. My brother is willing to give me the truck, as he is moving and can't take it with him. My question is this: is this jeep worth taking? If I do take it, is the 904 worth anything, or will another one just break again? The jeep has NO RUST, the body is in excellent shape, and it has hardly ever seen dirt.
