t-case advice please

Sorry this isn't exactly a Jeep question, but I figured I'd ask in a few different places just to get the most possible thoughts on this.. In my S15 pickup, I have an NP207 transfer case. I was wondering if this is a particularly good/bad transfer case? If it's not a particularly desireable/durable t-case, will something else, like maybe an NP231 or something else swap directly in? Would either a NP231, 207, or something else handle a 350 V8? I only have the 2.8L for now, but planning for the future a bit... Thanks!

No, Brad. The NP 207 is actually the early light duty version of the NP/NV 231.

The 1984-86 XJs were its first Jeep use. It was insalled in early YJs with the 2.5L 4 cyl and the 3 speed auto tranny (Chrysler Torqueflite 904). Like the 231, it was aluminum cased and chain drive. It's low range was 2.61:1. It was later superceded by the NP 231. I have one in my 86 XJ and have had no troubles with it, mainly because I've kept the Cherokee stock(2.8, 904, D30,D35, 4.10).
My XJ currently has 123k miles on it.

Jeep may have put the 207 in the TJ but I think it is improbable. By 1997, the NP 207 was pretty obsolete. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Tim, I would think that the 207 couldn't stand up to a SB Chevy, 4.3 L six or a Jeep 4.0L six's horsepower. The 231 is much more robust and would fit the bill. Can you fit one of those engines in your 85 S-15? I can't in my 86 XJ without doing some fire wall cutting./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I've heard that there are some places that sell all the adapters necessary to be able to put a sb chevy in there. Probably still need some fabrication to get it in there good, but I've seen some S10/S15s of this vintage with sb chevys... /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Probably what you'd want is an NP241 from a full-size '88 or newer GM coupled with a V-8 style TH700 for a V-8. OR, you could get all that from a wrecked 4.3 S truck. Actually, a wrecked 4.3 truck could provide everything needed to make your truck a 4.3-powered machine. Just a thought.

That would be an interesting option, TEX. I never really considered that for some reason, but for a little pickup like that the 4.3L should make more than adequate power. And too much power just breaks parts anyway... That's going to be a tough choice, but since it's mainly going to be mainly used on some sand dunes, I'd probably want the least amount of weight in there possible, but is the 4.3 that much lighter than a 350 to where it'd be really noticeable? I like the availability of different options..

Thanks for the replies everyone! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

The 4.3 IS a 350 with two cylinders cut off - same bore, same stroke. It's a good little engine - I had the Vortec MPI version in my '92 Sonoma (200hp), and that thing moved pretty well. However, considering the cost of any engine swap, I would go for a V8, even if it was just mildly built. The TBI version of the 4.3 is sort of a dog - 160 HP, and the 350 swap into an S truck is a very clean swap. Fits right in. The weight penalty would be minimum, I'd guess 100 lbs. max. Not to mention that small block Chevys are probably the most plentiful engine out there, so it may even be cheaper than using a 4.3.

My mom and dad have a 91 s-10 with a 4.3 700r and it runs strong.
hard not to spin the wheels on that lite of truck. It would give you
more room to work on it if you went with the 4.3
Best thing you could is fine one to test drive or ride in to see if
its got what you need.

xyj.....no they both have the puegot 5 speed....and I don't think there are any similarities between the 208 and the 207 transfer case...I believe the 208's were used in all Chevy applications, however they are chain driven like the 231's.

I have driven a friend's truck with a 4.3L. I like it, but I still like the additional power and torque of a 350, and the nice exhaust sound.. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

I think the 208 is gear drive, and 207 is chain drive...

I didn't even realize that. I guess I misread the article I saw. Thanks for the correction /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif
