Synthetic oil

After 23k miles on my 4.0, I have finally decided to dish out a little more money for synthetic oil. Is it too late to switch? I purchased a case of 10w-30, should I have bought 5w-30 or 0w-40? The track auto only carried a limited amount of oil filter brands, so I picked up a fram sure grip. Is this filter okay to use with synthetic oil? Any suggestions? Thanks.

I started running Mobil 1 a few years back and I love it. Just rubbing it between your fingers you can feel that it's slicker then snake snot. I always run a fram filter and have noticed a performance gain when I switch. If your motor burns oil it'll burn a bit more on synthetic, same goes for leaks. But I changed my old 4runner over at 140k with no ill efffects. Just never put it in a fresh motor it's so slick that it won't let the rings seat. As far as weight it's pretty much a personal choice based on your climate. Happy Jeepin'

Mileage? I changed the 4.0 in my '98 TJ over to synthetic around 32k miles. I changed our (former) Samurai over to synthetic around 140k miles, after a new rear main seal. The Sammy started weeping oil at the front seal, but never saw any drops.

As far as viscosity, I put Mobil 1 10w-30 in our TJ because the owner's manual specs 10w-30, except in really cold conditions. I was planning to use Pennzoil synthetic like I did in the Samurai, but they jacked their prices up to only 3 cents less than Mobil 1. I was wanting to use Mobil 1 anyway, I read that their 10w-30 and 5w-30 are the same stuff, just labeled different. It can get below zero here in the winter, and above 100 F in the summer. I don't want to be stocking too many different oils. Our Chrysler still gets Pennzoil dino (5w-30 until temps get above 90F, then 10w-30 until temps get below 60F), but it's done well at 205k miles with dino, and has a rear main seal drip that might leak with synthetic.

As a side note, the synthetic works really great for household use. The bushings in the exhaust fan in the bathroom kept gumming up when I used ordinary oil. I lubed them with a little Pennzoil 5w-50 synthetic (left over from the Sammy), and haven't had to mess with it since

Mobil 1 is great .....I've used it since it came out. You shouldn't have any problem with it. Awesome flow in the cold. I use the 0w-30 in the colder 6 months and 5w-30 in the warmer 6 months (twice a year .....about every 6-6500 miles). Before you choose an oil filter ....check this out.

I started using Castrol Syntec 10-30 in my CJ after the engine rebuild. It cost more but I think it's worth it. I still change it every 4,000 just like regular oil. That's what I was told to do. I'm satisfied.

A few years back, my beater car for work, '85 Ford Crown Vic', had one of those mpg computers in it, and I was doing a lot of highway driving, so I figured it would be a great time to test out synthetic oil.

I got a .8 MPG boost from the swap. I'm now using Mobil 1 in my CJ-7, (150 cu.in.) and while I didn't do any MPG calcs, I definitely notice MUCH easier cold weather starts.
