Who uses synthetic gear oil?

What brand do you use?

What size container (1 quart, gallon, 5 gallon)?

I use advanced auto brand, regular old gear oil.

I change mine about 4-5 times a year due to either water contamination or fixingbroken parts.

Synthetic would be a waste of money. How often do you change yours?

Why do you believe that synthetic gear lube is a waste of time?

I think he's saying that because he changes it frequently and it costs more. Not making it worth it to him.

I have changed my rear diff fluid three times in the street sammy and I have owned it since the end of November. That isn't the usual for me. But one morning in Janurary it was a chunk of ice. I had changed it in December when I did some deep water wheeling. I can't figure out why it had water in it again, I don't remember wheeling any watery spots but oil doesn't usually freeze like that.

Synthetic is supposedly great for long durations.
Due to circumstances other than “oil wear”, I change my oil 4-5 times a year.

Why spend extra money on something that I am going to throw away before it reaches the end of it’s useful life? I have never reused gear oil.

That would be like buying a 60,000 mile tire when you normally have a flat that destroys the tire every 20,000. It’s a waste of money.

Also, I have not seen any long term results in running synthetic vs. normal gear oil, although I haven’t researched it.

If you change your oil often, why use synthetic?
Do you have experience with an “apples to apples” comparison why and when synthetic is better?

Mobil1 15W 50 in the engine (1L I work it very hard) 3-5000 mile intervals

Vavoline or Mobil1 75W/90 (M1 is cheaper) in the Xfer, tranny and R&P's

Mobil1 #28 synth grease in the bearings and U-joints too.

It's quieter, and has kept the engine at or above 190 compresion with over 141K on it, 52K since I got it.

Quarts, its all I have found handy, I haven't gone looking for distributors, maybe I should.

Yes its worth it.

I guess it depends on the person. It isn't worth it to me for my samurai because; My sammy eats oil and I frequently change lubticant and maintain "greasy" areas.

When I had my drag car I only ran Mobil syth oils. Mainly because I had few thousand+ dollars into parts/labor in the motor alone. And all the engine-guys I had ever talked with that ran as much nitrous as me recommended the same. I thought of that as protecting the investment. But it did suck changing the oil often with synth-> $$$.

Amsoil or Mobil 1 gear lube. They reduce operating temps considerably and protect far better than dino lubes....

Someone makes a blend, Valvoline maybe? Put it (75-90) in the tranny, diffs & xfer case. With the old oil last winter on 0 mornings the zuke would stall when I let out the clutch while warming up. Now it drops a couple of hundred rpms and quickly comes back up. It also shifts way nicer too. I originally put in cheaper dino gear oil to kinda flush the old stuff out for a couple thousand then the synthetic. Definite change from the fresh dino to the syn.

DId you run tubing from the vents in the diffs-tranny-and tcase?
Are your seals good?
I am in the rivers up to my hood on a regular basis and have never had a significant amount of water in anything.
Not even the standard milkshake.

I am contemplating putting synthetic in my DD just to get rid of the cold weather (Thick oil) drag.

At -20 deg F, When I first crank up, I take her out of gear,
When I let out the clutch, she will travel forward with just the viscosity of the gear lube in the trans.
Imagine the increase in fuel economy / speed if there were less resistance in the gears.

Yes, I have plumbed my dif tubes up into the cab.
My seals are obviously not water tight.
When I pull a front axle, there is always water in the outer.

The rear is always a milkshake after playing in mud/water.
I change them regularly, so it's not a big issue with me.

I do agree about the synthetic grease.
Get a "moly" type grease that is sticky. This stuff doesn't run out when hot, doesn't mix with water, and still looks clean when you change it (knuckles).
