Tuesday morning my cherokee was stolen outside of New York City by Newark NJ (The stolen car capital of the US). So if anyone comes accross a 99 dark green XJ with the front fenders trimmed up and 31" tires - give me a heads up.

What a great feeling it is to walk out of your house and see the empty spot where you parked your jeep 6 hours ago. I did that "maybe i parked it around the corner look" to no avail.

I'll bet my Jeep has been lowered and given the pleasure of 20" chrome wheels and is cruising in "da hood". Or just smashed up and burned.

what can you do.

XJ's are one of the most stolen vehicles in the US do to the very fact that there are so many of them. Easier to chop and sell parts than whole vehicles. I would definatly be out searching the salvage yards and auto shops but being in New York area would make it a duanting task

xjs are not stolen as much as you would suspect the most stolen cars are the little honda's and toyota's cuz thats what cool these days.

my dads yota was taken like 3 years ago and we never heard a word of it since so i hope you the best of luck and if you do get it back put in a kill switch the club and an alarm system so that you have 3 things they have to get through first.

according to the police: the theiving hoodlems steal the xj since it dosen't stand out. Like you said - there are a lot of them. Then they go shopping for wheels off other vehicles. Throw a jack in the back and go cruising.

I do have full coverage. and it was pretty empty except for my hockey bag full of goalie equipment. I guess the fustration of loosing my equipment in the middle of a season is what bothers me the most. Insurance will cover all - but it is just a pain.

As for looking for it - I have. I got a call from a lady in East Orange (the Super Hood) - she found my registration card on the street. So I went looking around. Place is worse than Bagdad. No luck.

I know how that feels. A tip for older XJ's without an airbag. Get a column collar. It will cover the area of your steering column that a thief normally breaks and steals your vehicle. I had my '85 Trans Am stolen a few years ago. When I got it back, I could(and had to) start it with a flathead screwdriver until I put in a new column. I bought this collar at Pep Boys and tried it on my '91 XJ. It fit perfectly. They may not totally prevent a theft, but sure do help your chances.

Another idea, less obvious than a cut out switch, and harder for a thief to bypass. Wire up a switch to your Neutral Safety switch so that the Jeep won't even start until you flip the switch(it'll be like trying to start in Drive or reverse).
You could hide a switch in your glove compartment, console, ashtray, under the seat or right on the dash. Who's going to know what its for.

I have that red collar for my YJ. That Jeep was 'broken' into (without roof and doors) so many times when I went to school in Philly. Always had that collar on. Still have that Jeep.

Thanks for the condolences. You should see the ammount of paperwork that is needed to file an insurance claim. Warning to all of you - keep recipts. File them somewhere. It's hard to remember what I had in it. I'm constantly remembering what was tucked where inside of my jeep.

Pain in the butt.

i have posted this before but i'm sure some of you newer guys will get a kick out of it.

my dad started a car audio store called Kartunes... where they installed stereos of all sorts and security systems....

one that never made it was this device that... when the car was off and you activated it,,,,,,would charge the door handles, wheels, and if you bought the extra hardware the steering wheel and dash with a potential 10,000 votls

it worked through a large capacitor that would hold the energy and when it found a ground...(a theif) it would drain all 10,000 volts into them...

the problem with it was that theifs were not the only thing to touch a car when it was left alone...

people had it discontinued because they kept finding their cats and other pets dead by the wheels, after they had brushed up against the car,,,,,,,,,, now it wouldnt kill a human but would def. paralize him for a good while.

LOL just thought that was funny...
