IF a guy was trying to get his rig together for the jam this year...and IF that guy only had the cash for one major mod after swapping in scout d44's and buying 33" tires..SHOULD that mod be lockers or a winch?

I'd say 4.27:1 ring and pinions so you can get up and go with those 33" tires.

How will welded spiders do on the street though? Not as a daily driver, but I do not have the ability to trailer it everywhere?

the 3.54's in it are gonna suck, I know. Anyone have a pair of 4 series carriers and r/p's fro a 44 cheap??lol Ryan has the stuff new for about $400.

No worse than running a spool. Sure you'll chirp the tires around every corner, but it's always fun to see the expressions on pedestrians faces... they expect to see a 16 year old sliding around the corner in his camaro, but it's just you going 2 miles an hour in your Jeep.

Locker. You'll be amazed at how you will be able to back out of a situation where previously you were stuck. A mini spool for a D-44 is less than $100. Install it yourself on a Saturday, no setting up gears. If you don't like it on the street pull it and sell it.

And Beer (to give the guy that wiched you out)

Gears will make your vehicle drive better, but you'll still get stuck. Lockers will give you more traction, but you'll still get stuck. A winch will be there to pull you out when you get stuck, and you will get stuck. Willie Worthy, Four Wheeler's tech guru, has always said that the first and most important addition you can make to your vehicle is a winch.

I got a winch first, then welded the rear spiders. The locked rear will make a huge difference, but will only get you stuck deeper in the trail. If you wheel with people with a winch, you can probably put it off for a bit.
As for the Jam, there are so many wrench hands there, that if you can't get it out of the woods, something is very, very wrong.
As far as I know, even after this happened(not at the Jam though), RQ got his jeepster out of the woods.

i am not against a spool or welded spiders for that matter. I was just concerned about twisting axles, etc... on the street. If breakage while going around corners with 33's isn't a problem, then cost-wise a mini spool may be the way to go. I could probably swing mini spool and a winch. The jam was my concern. Putting off the major winch purchase until the fall would sure give me more breathing room om making the jam. And it may enable me to buy a better winch, too.

Any suggestions for the front?

After we got the Jeepster righted, I drove it out. Just had to have everybodies extra water for the radiator.
We'll have two rides for the Jam as far as the plans go right now so a moderate and hard ride should be available.
As far as front & rear lockers go, the diff is LOCKED with any good locker. Right? A LockRite (Aussie Locker, EZ Locker, etc,.) can slip (with a major crunching sound and feel) when it gives. A Detroit has a limited amount of "play" built into it but you are still locked all of the time.
Welded spiders or a spool just have no slip or give. Keep your tires aired up on the street and you can skid your way through the turns. I chirped my tires a lot more when I had a drop in locker in the rear than since when I've had the spool in the rear.
As far as not being able to turn when in four wheel drive on the trails, no, it's harder when fully locked up no matter what mechanical front locker you have. Get a twin stick and make life easier on yourself!

As with RQ I also run a full spool in the rear. There is no way I would trade the spool for either a detroit or some "lunch box" locker. That being said - If I had the cash at the time of the spool install I would have gone with a selectable locker like the ARB or the OX - so my turning radius on the street would be better. As for the winch - just do the really hard trails with friends that have them.
